(Pol Moises Gregory D.O. Clamor, Mariz Joy R. Macarilay, Camille S. Sonajo, Ma. Rita A. Taborada, Hazuki E. Yamamoto; October 14, 2010) url: http://www.papercamp.com/essay/22787/Computerized-Library
SUMMARY
Abstract: The rise of technology is spreading in the recent years. In the field of education where students and teachers are involved, they are now finding information through the Internet. However, they still do not forget what the essence of a library is: a collection of books and non-books for researching and retrieval needs. Furthermore, the library is now coping up with the technology today, and this includes creating an automated library system for the easiness of the operations of the library. In line with this, the proposed study problematizes how would an automated library system would be beneficial to the Navotas City Library. The methods include the designing of the data flow, the existing and proposed systems; and most of all, the creating of an actual system using Microsoft Access. The proposal argues that it would greatly save time and effort about recording of logged members, borrowed and returned books. It would also reduce errors to the filing of books, and most of all, it will reduce costs of having bulky information because all of the general functions of a library is in the scope of the proposed study.
The study of creating an automated library system for Navotas City Library would benefit the following: Library users especially the students. Through an automated library system, they can easily find the books that they are looking for without going through the traditional way of searching a library material. Convenience is more visible for it is not time-consuming, resulting to a number of accomplished works. Librarian(s) and library staff. The automated library system would improve the monitoring capacities of those who maintain the library. It would be easier to determine whether a particular book is on-shelf or not. In addition, they can easily identify when will the borrowed material be returned and if a borrower has failed to return the book on its due date. Furthermore, the library staff would be much guided when it comes to recognizing new inventory books, letting them arrange it promptly and accordingly. The library. The automated system would be an advantage to the library itself, because it will radiate a positive effect by catching many users because of its technology-based environment. The researchers of this study, through this study, the researchers would gain knowledge and experience about designing an automated library system for Navotas City Library. The learning that they have earned would be applied by the time they finish the subject, and eventually, by the time they graduate and have a job. Other researchers. People who want to have a study about designing a system especially for libraries may find this study very useful because through this, they can gather enough information in making their own system. A library is defined as a collection of sources, resources, and services, mainly books; where it is organized for use to the public and maintained by government, public or private individuals or organizations (Wikipedia, 2010). In a point of view of many people, it is where books are found. However, since to the trend of technology, they are now equipped with sources coming from different formats, such as in multimedia services, and the Internet. In the Philippines, one of the most popular sources of information is The National Library, owned and funded by the government, which has about 1,200,000 collections of books and non-books. Also among the popular libraries are those in notable universities such as in the University of the Philippines (with 948,000 volumes), University of Santo Tomas (with 822,000 volumes), and University of the East (with 177,900 volumes). There are also city and municipality libraries that are found in different locations of the country. These were usually funded and maintained by the local government in the location. One of those is the Navotas City Library. Navotas City Library (NCL) is a public library located beside the City Hall at M. Naval Street, Sipac-Almacen, Navotas City. It was established as Navotas Municipal Library by virtue of Municipal Resolution No. 93-61 dated September 2, 1993 through the efforts of then Mayor Felipe C. Del Rosario. The plan was realized in August 19, 1994, where a 350-square meter two-floor building was inaugurated. Since then, the government of Navotas funded the library and it became open for donations coming from non-government organizations (NGOs) and philanthropists. The name Navotas Municipal Library was later changed to Navotas City Library in June 24, 2007 after Navotas was converted into a highly urbanized city.
SIMILARITIES/RELATION
The proposed system of Navotas City Library is similar to the proposed system we are creating. Based on their documentation it is stated that the system is created for the benefit of the Navotas City Library. The automated library system would improve the monitoring capacities of those who maintain the library, which is similar to our system.
The Computerized Library system we proposed will also improve the monitoring capacities of those who maintain the library. The system will improve accuracy when it comes to library transactions e.g. borrowing of books, paying overdue, returning of books, managing the number of books, and securing transactions. In automated library system for Navotas City Library they can easily find the books that they are looking for without going through the traditional way of searching a library material. Convenience is more visible for it is not time-consuming, resulting to a number of accomplished works. Librarian(s) and library staff. Also similar to the computerized library system we proposed, the Computerized Library System will find books without the traditional way of searching shelves by shelves, it will directly search the database for the available books and tell if it is still available or not. It is also, convenient to use and will also result for more accomplished works.
