The relationship between the Ancient Olympics and the modern Olympic Games can be described as non-existent, distant, close or complex.
In order to determine the nature of the relationship one first needs to identify similarities between the Ancient and Modern Olympics. Some similarities are the idea of competitive sports, the glory that comes with a victory in both games, as well as the identical name assigned to both sporting events, despite their differences.
I believe the biggest similarity between the two is the physical capacity that the athletes have to acquire to participate, since physical prowess is the foundation to both the Ancient and Modern Olympics. …show more content…
One prime example of this is the truce that existed during the ancient Olympics, which inspired the modern Olympics. The idea of there being a certain type of unity during the run of the event is one of the founding factors as to who the Olympic games were revived. It would be an immense overstatement to say that world peace exists during the course of one of the games, but a lot of modern countries that participate do try to mend their relations to other nations, even if it is just for a while, when Olympic season comes around.
