In the case of Unoka, he deserves all the neglect he got from his son. He had a family and could barely even provide for them. All because of how lazy he was. He did not care about his main responsibility like a true father should. Okonkwo was cruel to him for a good reason.
For Nwoye, the story isn’t very much different. Nwoye is Okonkwo’s son and even then he still neglects him. Okonkwo really does not like
laziness and failure. The main reason Okonkwo does not like his son is because of how much he reminds him of his dad. He lives to not be a failure and despises anyone on the path to.
These are good reasons for Okonkwo disliking his father and son and this is why Okonkwo is sympathetic. He is so scared of the fear of becoming a failure. In his eyes, laziness can only lead to failure so since the reader sees everything from his eyes, they also have the same views. Overall, Okonkwo does not like failure. His father and son in his mind are failures.
