War is undoubtedly the greatest calamity that has fallen upon humans. In addition to causing countless deaths, massive debts, and severe destruction, modern warfare has also begun to globalize. Some believe that war is beneficial to economies and business, and has led to the formations of more organized societies. Both viewpoints may be true; however it is a well-known fact that the repercussions of America’s past wars outweigh most benefits. Since America is responsible for maintaining peace within itself and with other countries, it must reserve war as a last resort. For example, during a time when innocent civilians are being assassinated, or deprived of their basic human rights, America has a right to involve itself. There have often been times in history when this has occurred, and nations have not had governments strong enough to defend their people and fight for their rights, so America has righteously stepped in. An example of this was World War 1. At the start of World War 1, America was determined to stay out of the war and remain neutral agreeing that Europe’s private fight was none of their business. However, as Americans began viewing the horrors being done by Germany (such as the use of barbaric tactics, numerous killings, and countless invasions), they decided to declare war on Germany. Some say that America “ended the war”, because if they had not fought, an alliance may never have formed and the war may have continued much longer. America entered World War 1 to prevent the sufferings of their people as well. Since their sole purpose was to prevent suffering, it was an example of an acceptable time for America to engage itself in war. If America had decided to refrain from declaring war and remain neutral, it is very likely that many more German and American lives would have been lost. War should only be declared when any country’s welfare is at risk, or when self-defense is
