RESEARCH DESIGNS

[pic] 3.1 Definition of research designs

The term ‘research design’ is used in variety of ways by researchers. It is referred as a masterplan, blueprint, and even as a sequence of research tasks and activities. The research design provides a plan of how the researcher will go about answering the research question (s) defined by the manager and researcher together (clearly defining the problem into a researchable question is extremely important). The research design also contains clear objectives, derived from research data, the design technique(s) (survey), observation, experimental etc), the sampling methodology and procedures, the schedule and the budget. There should be clear justification with regard to the research design based on the research question and objectives.

A research design is a framework or blueprint for conducting the marketing research project. It details the procedures necessary for obtaining the information needed to structure or solve marketing research problems.

Research design is a set of advanced decisions that make up the master plan specifying the methods and procedures for collecting and analyzing the needed information.

Research design in simple terms is a plan of the methods and procedures that is used by researchers to collect and analyze the data needed by the manager.

Ever since the founding fathers of America wrote the first amendment, there has been controversy about what is and is not censorship. The first amendment states that “[c]ongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for redress of grievances.” In relatively recent history, a popular test of this amendment has been whether or not book banning should be allowed in schools. Book banning is when an establishment, such as a school system, decides that certain…

Often the first step in the research design process is to identify a real world problem or management dilemma and provide a very brief description of the nature of the issue, the undesirable symptoms, and our inability or lack of knowledge to solve the problem. All the other components are designed to produce a contribution to knowledge that will help solve this problem. While there are some fields that do pure research, there are plenty of real world management problems and opportunities for improvement that management researchers don't need to "dream up" things to research. If you have not yet identified a research topic then work on identifying an appropriate research topic then return to this section. Read more on identifying a topic.…

A research design is the framework for a study which provides useful deadlines for collecting and analyzing data. Research design can be thought of as the logic or master plan of a research that throws light on how the study is to be conducted. It shows how all of the major parts of the research study– the samples or groups, measures, treatments or programs, etc.– work together in an attempt to address the research questions. Research design is similar to an architectural outline. The research design can be seen as actualization of logic in a set of procedures that optimizes the validity of data for a given research problem. According to Mouton (1996, p. 175) the research design serves to "plan, structure and execute" the research to maximize the "validity of the findings". It gives directions from the underlying philosophical assumptions to research design, and data collection. Yin (2003) adds further that “colloquially a research design is an action plan for getting from here to there, where ‘here’ may be defined as the initial set of questions to be answered and ‘there’ is some set of (conclusions) answers” (p. 19). From a meta-analysis of research topics and methodologies in South Africa, van der Westhuizen (2002) found that the most typical application of qualitative research in instructional technology seems to be that of case studies.…
