When U2’s Bono sings “women of the future hold the big revelations” (Bono “Get On Your Boots”), he is referencing the rise of women’s roles in Africa in the twenty-first century. Yet, this phrase can also apply to women in other time periods such as in ancient Greece seen in the Sophocles’ play entitled Antigone. In Antigone, the protagonist, Antigone, is a daughter of the house of Lauis, which is a noble, ruling family that has been through much affliction from deaths in the family. When a law forbids Antigone to honor her traitorous (to the state) brother in a proper burial, Antigone disobeys it to honor the gods’ instructions. This act eventually leads to the deaths of Antigone and other main characters. For the twenty-first century reader, it is important to understand how gender roles and relationships vary from time period to time period in order to fully appreciate the equal status of women in today’s society. The authors of the feminist play, Antigone, portrays the society’s perspective of women as vindictive people, the limitations of women, and the growing strong-willed quality of some women that start to rise in the respective time period.…

The feminism movement is a moderately new advance, which has grown increasingly popular over the past two hundred years. Even though the venture of women gaining equality with men is relatively fresh, women who have stood alone as feminists have been around for a surprisingly long amount of time. Antigone is only one example of a classic role model to contemporary feminists. Antigone is comparable to modern-day feminists for three reasons: she confronts an authoritative institution run by men, attempts to defend her state from an intrusive supremacy, and she refuses to conform to her culturally uniform role as a woman.…

Pride is a powerful emotion, it can lead us to be people we are not, and lead us to be hurt. The act of being prideful comes from the power we are given through society, to say we are something others cannot say they are. Its also what makes everyone who they are, but too much pride can seize control of us causing an uproar of karma to surge our way. In Antigone, the blind prophet, Tiresias warns Creon that, “A corpse for a corpse the price, and flesh for flesh, one of your own begotten.” Furthermore he states, “All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.” In Antigone the real crime is to be unjust with your power, just because you have power does not mean you have to use it, so it is shown throughout history, and in our media that certain examples exhibit this behavior. This is the major downfall in their ways, for example: Rome, King Nebuchadnezzar in the Bible, and even in our kids shows certain cartoons exemplify pride, teaching kids that it is wrong such as Sandy in Spongebob. Each character exhibit this prideful quality, in which in turn each has led to their down fall of some kind, and with this unjust power they have been reprimanded in some way. Sure the quote could be retaining to Antigone, Creon, potentially all the characters of the story, though the real audience it is preaching to is all of man-kind. Everyone has their flaws and faults, because pride is in all of us, it is human nature to take pride in all of our work. The overwhelming flaw in human nature is to be consumed by this beast of pride, to take control of the chains of power and keep our pride in check. Pride is a scary thing; Antigone kept her pride in check, though when Creon is consumed by his pride it becomes his fault. Thus it reveals to us that Creon is the tragic hero in which his hamartia is revealed, which in turn is his pride.…

For her brother’s proper burial, Antigone goes to extreme lengths to fulfill her goal no matter what stands in her way. Against the new law made from Creon Antigone still buries Polyneices and accepts her punishment of death, calling it her destiny. In lines thirty six to forty five of Scene Two, the Sentry that caught Antigone explains of how she denied nothing and came quietly when arrested. Antigone argues that the gods’ laws are a greater authority than Creon’s and that it was their will to bury Polyneices. By saying this Antigone upholds one of the Greek traditions of pride to the god’s but also doesn’t admit that it was fully her own fault. With her sentence to death, Antigone defends her position and winds up committing suicide rather than suffering longer in life.…

Tragedy is usually concerned with a person of great stature, a king or nobleman, who falls because of hubris, or extreme pride and Antigone is no exception. Pride and its effects are a central part of Antigone's plot and theme. Pride, being part of their character and morality, overran in to their literature and was a complex and multifaceted concept in Greek tragedy, exemplified by Sophocles' Antigone. In the play both Creon and Antigone were incredibly proud and unwilling to back down once they took their stands. Creon had made a decision and was unwilling to compromise. Antigone was to die for her violation of the law, the sin of burying her brother.…

Pride is not a symbol for strength, but of arrogance. It does not modify you as a powerful individual, but as a weakling with feign courage. It is not something to be proud of, for it veils you with vanity and ignorance so delicately and innocently that it betrays your conscience into thinking that it is a normal feeling that has no consequence whatsoever. An example of this infamous trap is presented in the play of tragedy Antigone, written by Sophocles himself. A character by the name of Creon was a victim of pride born from his position as ruler of the city of Thebes. It wasn’t long before he wallowed in sorrow, as pride swallowed in whole, smothering his familial views, killing his feel for care, and taking its place beside the ones he loved so.…
