Research Paper On Hyponatremia
Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte abnormality. As hyponatremia develops brain cells loose sodium and chloride within 2-3 hrs followed by loss of organic osmolytes in next 48 hrs, however these organic solutes takes longer time to re accumulate intracellularly in the event of hyponatremia correction. If hyponatremia is corrected rapidly, serum becomes relatively hypertonic causing efflux of water from brain cell and thereby leading to cerebral myelinolysis. Even though urea is freely permeable across cell membranes, diffuses slowly between CSF and brain cells compared to plasma and muscle – leading to dialysis disequilibrium syndrome with influx of water in to brain cells. There has been case reports of azotemic hypanatremic cases

Hypertonic solutions are sometimes infused intravenously into the bloodstream of patients who are edematous (swollen because their tissues retain water). This is done to draw excess water out of the extracellular space and move it into the bloodstream so the kidneys can eliminate it. Hypotonic solutions may be used (with care) to rehydrate the tissues of extremely dehydrated patients. In mild cases of dehydration, drinking hypotonic fluids (such as apple juice and sports drinks) usually does the trick.…

Three types of homeostasis are involved: fluid balance, electrolyte balance, and acid-base balance. Fluid balance means that the total quantity of body water remains almost constant and that the distribution between the ICF and ECF are normal. Electrolyte balance implies the same thing for ions. Acid-base balance means that the pH of the ECF is maintained in the range of 7.35 to 7.45, and that gains or losses of hydrogen ion as a consequence of metabolism are followed by equivalent losses or gains so as to maintain constant buffer reserves.…

Diabetic Retinopathy, which is loss of vision and blindness, happens when tiny blood vessels grow in the eye, and the high concentration of glucose in fluid that are around the eye makes them fragile. Tiny bulges can be developed in the retina and it can develop in other areas in the eye, and if they start to leak or burst, the fluid and blood can spread throughout the eye. After it starts spreading, blood clot and scar tissue can start to form in front of the retina, which prevents light from hitting the retina, causing blindness. If the fluid is released it can cause swelling which leads to blurred vision. There is no treatment when this occurs ,but the prevention of the build up of glucose surrounding the blood vessels in the eye and the…

People with renal failure and are in the process of dialysis have been known to have several homeostatic imbalances. One of the major effects is electrolyte imbalance and this usually lead to different types of conditions. One of these condition known as hyperkalemia may occur if calcium levels exceed the amount that can be excreted. Another condition that may arise in the course of dialysis is arrhythmias (Elsevier,2013). This can lead to electrolyte imbalance and changes in homeostasis of acid and base. Other issues that can arise related to increased removal of fluid volumes include low blood pressure, cramping as well as muscle spasms. During dialysis, there is a high posibility of damage to the normal net filtration pressure due to increased membrane permeability and this as well leads to homeostatic imbalance.…

When a person goes into shock, their entire cardiovascular system is shutting down. The body first recognizes that it is going into shock and it begins to pull blood and fluid away from the nonessential organs such as the muscles and skin in order to keep blood circulating to the important organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. If shock goes untreated the blood flow will continue to decrease until it completely stops. There are many different types of shock that happen for different reasons and need to be treated differently. Hypovolemic Shock can be one of the more life threatening types of shock that a first responder will have to treat. This type of shock happens when the human body loses one fifth or twenty percent of its fluid or blood supply. There are two different types of Hypovolemic shock. There is hemorrhagic causes, which are sudden or large cuts, bleeding from blunt trauma, internal bleeding, etcetera. Then there is nonhemorrhagic causes which are due to vomiting and diarrhea. Both types of causes involve the body losing a significant amount of fluid or blood. When the body…

Hypothermia is a decrease in the core temperature below 35 degrees Celsius or 95 degrees Fahrenheit. There are various medical uses for hypothermia. Therapeutic hypothermia is the only proven effective treatment for post cardiac arrest patients. Hypothermia decreases the amount of cerebral oxygen needed and also lessens the inflammatory response post cardiac arrest. This prevents brain damage and death in patients. There were two major studies done on this topic. One in Europe and one in Australia; they showed very positive outcomes for the patients who were treated with therapeutic hypothermia. More of the patients who received the hypothermic…
