Mao Zedong was the leader of the Chinese Communist Party. He started the Great Leap Forward movement in China. Most of his goals, however, never worked out greatly for China.
Mao Zedong was born in Shaoshan, China on December 26, 1893. The country was in a very difficult time and life was hard for most people. Mao’s family lived better than most of China’s population and had three acres of farmland that they had kept for many generations. When Mao was 8 years old, he started going to a small school in his village. He did not receive the best education and later decided to work full time on the family’s farm. Once Mao’s father decided he was old enough, he arranged a marriage for Mao. Mao did not accept it and instead left his family to go to a school in the capital. When the Xinhua Revolution began in China, Mao took part in the Revolutionary Army and the Kuomintang. The army eventually overthrew the monarchy in 1912 and then founded the Republic of China. Leader Chiang Kai-shek saw what was happening and grew very worried about Mao’s army. He began to have small attacks on them but was not doing anything to stop Mao’s fighters. Finally, Chiang ordered a huge sweep of the country and eliminated any communist influence he could find. By October 1934, he had taken over one million communist supporters in the nation. When Mao heard of this, he began to alert the other leaders and persuaded them that the best option for them was to retreat. This led to the “Long March,” a march across the Chinese mountains into northern China. Some estimate that only around 30,000 of the 100,000 survived on the trip. When the communists began to arrive, Mao convinced many to join him because of his talents and inspiration. Mao rose to the top communist
