Performance-Enhancing Drugs Today when people hear the words Performance-Enhancing Drugs they automatically think of athletes and how it will make them a better player. However, using drugs to make an athlete better is extremely unhealthy. When players use these drugs they get a power they never had before. They feel like a completely new player that has the skill and strength to do anything they want to while playing their sport. When they are using these drugs they are not thinking about how they are risking their lives. Most athletes do not realize how dangerous these are, and the ones that do realize how dangerous the drugs are obviously do not mind risking their life to play a good game.
The drug use in baseball is supposed to be over, but recently eighteen professional baseball players have failed their drug test. It is also proven that in the last year twenty-one professional football players have had to sit out because they failed their drug test. In the 2012 London Olympics, twenty-one athletes had to sit out due to failing their drug test. Various studies of American high school athletes estimate that 5.9 percent of boys and 4.6 percent of girls have used anabolic steroids to help them build muscles (Fish).
Why should performance-enhancing drugs not be legalized? These drugs not only harm the person using them but they also harm the people around the user. They cause mental trauma of lying to everyone. Chris Smith stated, “The primary reason PED’s are outlawed in professional sports is that they give users an unfair advantage over the rest of the field.” (Mankins).
When people think of the word drugs a lot of times they think of “dope”. The word dope came from a Dutch word “doop”. In South Africa people generally referred to dooping as drinking a thick liquid or sauce (Performance Enhancing Drugs Tarnish Athletes).. People would drink this specific drink to help them work hard for just a short space of time. In the United States people typically call it doping and they refer to that as administering a drug that is used as a stimulant. There are numerous pros and cons on why we should or should not legalize
