The mystery powder is living, however, it is no longer alive. While placing it under a dissecting microscope under a 450x magnification, it was easy to come to the conclusion that it was a bug, due to the distinguishable body type, including a pair of eyes. In biology, a list was constructed that had “characteristics of living things.” The list was composed of characteristics such as: movement, eating, breathing, reproduce, produce water, and have a life cycle, to name a few. Because the bug was dead, it was nearly impossible to compare it to any of the characteristics on the this. However, the anatomy could be compared. While the type of bug is unknown, the bug was black, along with some other few bugs of the same petri dish, which is most likely believed to be the same type.…
Although it is a novel of fiction, the historical facts that are mentioned in the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies written by Julia Alvarez, come alive through the lens of four courageous sisters pushing reformations for all. The sisters were lucky enough to be given an excellent education from attending the Colegio de Inmaculada Concepcion, or the school…

While one reads the Sue Monk Kidd novel, The Secret Life of Bees, an enigma acquainted with the book is why the Black Madonna of Breznichar in Bohemia is used as opposed to a white Virgin Mary. With the story taking place in the racist south of 1964 it would be reasonable to assume that a black Mary wouldn’t be common, or readily accepted; however she still occupies a large area of the women’s lives. For the Boatwright’s, the Daughters of Mary, and quickly for Lily and Rosaleen, the black Virgin Mary is placed in the book as a source of strength, and maternal comfort.…
In the movie Inside Out from Pixar that we watched in the class period last week we learned how new memories can be created. The movie is successful by showing us how emotions can be driven by certain events and how it can control our state of mind. The film gives us multiple examples to show individuals how the human brain can react to certain things and how it can control their behavior. This also teaches psychology to people who are not aware of how the human brain can work and function.…
First, “The Literature of Americans,” Kimberly Koza writes: “By discovering the Literature of our neighbors, we may also learn about ourself.” The story I chose was The Day of the Butterfly by Alice Munro. The theme of The Day of the Butterfly varies resulting in a theme from the story; include the realization that the theme relates to our common desire and struggle to belong—to have a friend—and the cruel consequences for those who become outsiders. Additionally, the story Day of the Butterfly is about a sixth-grade girls Myra Sayla who is an immigrant, and responsible for her little brother, Helen a friend of Myra gives her a tin butterfly from a Cracker Jack box. Daring to reach out to Myra makes Helen feel both self-congratulatory and…
They say the mind protects us from ourselves, but we also “cook facts” (134) which happen to go hand in hand. Cooking facts are “…deliberate attempts to generate positive views…” (134) a few examples are failing miserably on the test but tell yourself there is always next time and you’ll study harder for the next one and example from the book being is that your fiancé left you at the altar but saying “She was never really right for me…”(134). The mind tries to protect us from remembering bad things or bad experiences. I’ve seen some of my friends try and deny the fact that his father had died of cancer, he just didn’t believe it until the day of his funeral. But in the end they made it in their mind that he was in a better place and no longer suffering. In my own case, my family and I were coming back from a trip to Florida on a coach bus which ended up being hit by another car and flipped on its side on a four lane highway which ended up being hit by two more cars. I am thankful to say that I was buckled so I only came out of the crash with a concussion, but it still affects me every day. My vision has never been the same, yeah sure I can read really fast when I’m reading to myself…
But that doesn’t mean we can’t discover new creatures in some of the more secluded areas of the world, and that’s exactly what has happened in the Pacific Northwest region of the US.…
As for the children, it shows all of their actions only support that a person without faith can oftentimes be a dangerous and self-destructive one. They don’t think ahead. They acted out of blind rage, their emotions taking over. Then the sun really did come. They played and danced in the rare sunshine, having the time of their lives. But soon enough, the rain falls once again. The children rush inside only to remember margot. They realize their mistake(s) and regret everything. “They could not meet each other’s faces glances. Their faces were solemn and pale. They looked down at their hands and feet, their faces…
Oh, I absolutely despise those eight-legged arthropods capable of making you yelp, jump and hold onto something for dear life. The way the arachnid stares at you with those black beady eyes really gives you the heebie-jeebies. As it crawls towards you, you are absolutely petrified trying to figure out a way to execute it the most lethal way possible. Although, you may be a thousand times bigger than the specimen, it’s still able to give you a shiver down your spine. You might have guessed the abomination I was speaking about: they are spiders.…

Our memories shape us and our reality. In the short story, ‘All summer in a day’ by Ray Bradbury, Margot was the only child that could remember the sun. All the other children have forgotten what it felt like since they were born on Venus and the sun only appeared when they were two. Margot however, was born on earth and she stayed there until four. This enabled her to remember what the sun looked and felt like. The sun is in her reality which caused her to be isolated, excluded and outcasted because the other children wouldn’t accept her reality. Our memories also affect our perception of the world around us. There are people who had bad memories of their school life because of some drama that might’ve happened. This could lead to a strong dislike towards school because their reality is now emphasised on how school is just drama that affects their social status. All the good memories could be filtered out and that would shape their own reality. Our memories shape our reality because we can choose to remember and forget things, but it is through our experiences that we gain these memories.…
