She is an ethnic minority, because she is of a Latino race. Esperanza is also very self-conscious, which makes her seem very childish in ways, even though her thought level is much higher than her peers. She doesn’t feel as if she belongs, she connects to the four trees outside of her window. They grow despite the concrete sidewalk. She relates to them because they don’t belong but yet they stay and thrive. She doesn’t feel she belongs on Mango Street and wants to leave it behind. Esperanza was forced to grow up and as a result she had her childhood stolen. She is envious of Nenny’s childhood. She is socially pressured and as a result she was put in a horrible situation. She becomes a little closer to her dad when her grandfather dies, but she still stays closer to her mother. Esperanza is determined to reach her goals despite obstacles such as Mango Street. You create a group for all straight people to protest for rights. That is what gays are doing now. We just want to be heard and have the same rights that straight people have. No one should be a minority. Unless they are not physically/mentally able to care for themselves.
