Research Plan
A. Problem Being Addressed
This study will be conducted to determine if Alugbati (Basella alba) plant can be used as an alternative synthetic dye.
Specifically, this study will attempt to answer the following questions:
1. Is Alugbati (Basella alba) plant can be used as an alternative synthetic dye?
2. Is there a significant difference between the commercial synthetic dye and the natural synthetic dye from Alugbati (Basella alba) plant in terms of:
a. Brightness of color.
B. Goals/ Expected Outcomes/ Hypotheses
This study will determine the use of Alugbati (Basella alba) plant as an alternative synthetic dye.
Hypotheses:
1. Alugbati (Basella alba) plant may be an alternative synthetic dye because the material itself is also called the red vine and proven that can be made as ink.
2. There is a significant difference between the commercial synthetic dye and the natural synthetic dye from Alugbati (Basella alba) plant.
C. Procedures Enough amount of alugbati stems to be crush in a mortar and pestle. Strain the produced juice into a bowl. Discard the solid stem remains. Repeat until you’ve procured one cup of juice. Add rubbing alcohol to hasten drying time after use, vinegar to enhance the color and act as preservative, iodine to keep color from fading and salt as preservative. After the needed preparations, the produced synthetic dye will be tested on a piece of fabric cotton and will be compared into the commercial synthetic dye.
Risk and Safety Proper usage of materials and equipment, using safety gears like gloves, etc. and constant awareness and advised in order to avoid accidents caused by this project.
Data Analysis The two dyes, commercial synthetic dye and Alugbati synthetic dye will be
