Research Study of Ink
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study
Ink is a liquid or paste that contains pigments or dyes and is used to color a surface to produce an image, text, or design. Ink is used for drawing or writing with a pen, brush, or quill. Thicker inks, in paste form, are used extensively in letterpress and lithographic printing. Ink can be a complex medium, composed of solvents, pigments, dyes, resins, lubricants, solubilizers, surfactants, particulate matter, fluorescers, and other materials. The components of inks serve many purposes; the ink’s carrier, colorants, and other additives control flow and thickness of the ink and its appearance when dry. Many ancient cultures around the world have independently discovered and formulated inks for the purposes of writing and drawing. Lamp black is said to be used for making an ink. It has Fine soot collected from incompletely burned carbonaceous materials, used as a pigment and in matches, explosives, lubricants, and fertilizers.
The researchers make use of the God-given gifts in a unique and imaginative sense and also use their God-given talents and intelligence to create a splendid new idea. An interesting research project like this gives them a sense of curiosity and creativity. This research project gives them the inkling of how to be practical and resourceful. We have observed that Lamp black have the quality and capability for making an ink. This observation really convinced us to push through this kind of topic. According to what the researchers have discovered, with the aid of the internet, lamp black can also describe a certain hue of black and a type of ink that can be made from some common items. It’s a black colloidal substance consisting wholly or principally of amorphous carbon and used to make inks. They expect their product to be as good ink as any other and at the same time good for the people’s pockets and affordable. The lamp black that the researchers are going to make will be much use.

Toner consists of a dry, powdery substance that is electrically charged so that it adheres to a drum, plate, or piece of paper charged with the opposite polarity2. Common ingredients in toner are styrene acrylate copolymer, iron oxide, polymethyl, methacrylate, carbon black, polyester resin, amorphous silica, dyes, polypropylene, and waxes.3 As we see there are a lot of different ingredients, but styrene acrylate, carbon black and styrene copolymer, along with polyester resin are the most commonly used. Out of all of them, carbon black is the most dangerous compound. Carbon black, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified as a 2B carcinogen, or "a dust that is possibly carcinogenic to humans4. Carbon black is a key pigment. The synthesis of carbon black is an energy intensive process, as it requires burning hydrocarbons at extremely high temperatures at approximately 2000 degrees Celsius in order to obtain elemental carbon.5 Styrene acrylate copolymer is makes up approximately 80% of the mixture that is used in toners. This is classified as a resin and is the key ingredient in the xerographic process. Styrene acrylate copolymer is manufactured from a process called a batch emulsion polymerization. Exact formulations of this compound vary from manufacturer to…

The story begins on 1888 when John Loud, an American leather tanner, patented a roller-ball-tip marking pen. Loud’s invention featured a reservoir of ink and a roller ball that applied the thick ink to leather hides. However, it was never produced for the ink was the major problem - if the ink was thin the pens leaked, and if it was too thick, they clogged. Depending on the temperature, the pen would sometimes do both. After almost fifty years, an improved version of Loud’s patent was invented in Hungary in 1935 by Ladislao Biro and his brother, Georg. Ladislao Biro, who studied medicine, art, and hypnotism, was editing a small newspaper-where he was frustrated by the amount of time he wasted filling fountain pens and cleaning up ink smudges. Besides that, the sharp tip of his fountain pen often scratched the newsprint (paper). Determined to develop a better pen, Ladislao and Georg, who was a chemist, set about making models of new designs and formulating better inks to use in them. One summer day, the Biro brothers met Augustine Justo, the president of Argentina. After the brothers showed him their model of…
