Responsibility In Lord Of The Flies

Responsibility is the quality or state of being in charge of someone or something. In order to have a functioning society, those of the community, must have responsibilities and achieve them. However, too often people lack certain traits or characteristics that withhold them from being successful and achieving tasks. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the main characters will show how different personality traits and mindsets can set back or take away from achieving a duty. Ralph, one of the older boys who was born a leader, demonstrates that you must always stay sane or you will loose structure. Jack, an older boy as well who’s a dictator, illustrates that having too much power can lead to horrible events. Lastly, a younger boy named Piggy shows that intelligence doesn't always win over power. In the Lord of the flies Ralph, Jack, and Piggy all had responsibilities and impacted the way their society ran, whether in a good or bad way.

I can’t see no more and I got to get my glasses back. Awful things has been done on this island. I voted for you for chief. He’s the only one who ever got anything done. So now you speak, Ralph, and tell us what. Or else –” (Golding 541). It is also evident when talking to Ralph he says, “Come away. There’s going to be trouble. And we’ve had our mean” (Golding 21).
