[Final Paper]
The origin of the dance, Tinikling is often mistaken to have its origins from the Spanish period in which farmers were said to have been punished by standing in between bamboo poles if they were unproductive in the rice paddies. However, the dance really originated in Leyte in the Visayas region and this was before the Spanish period. The folk dance portrays the movements of a bird, tikling or Slaty-breasted Rail, considered to be a pest in the rice fields. It mimics the movement of the tikling as it goes around the fields avoiding traps set up by farmers as well as the farmers who are trying to capture this elusive bird. Essentially, the dance involves two people hitting and sliding hollow bamboo poles on the ground while other dancers step over and between these poles. In its most basic forms, Tinikling involves two boys and two girls divided by couples. The first pair dances while the second clamps the bamboos together and on the floor in rhythm to music. When a couple commits an error in their dance, they will switch turns and will be the one to operate the bamboos. This continues and the bamboo clamping progressively increases in speed, similar to the modern day jump rope.
There are 5 steps in the Tinikling dance, which are a combination of three basic 4/4 step called single, doubles and hops. The steps starts, assuming a right foot lead, with :
Single
Count 1 - Hop on left foot outside poles
Count 2 - Hop again on left foot outside poles
Count 3 - Step on right foot between poles
Count 4 - Step on left foot between poles
Count 1 - Hop right foot outside poles
Count 2 - Hop again on right foot outside poles
Count 3 - Step on left foot between poles
Count 4 - Step on right foot between poles
During doubles,
Count 1 - Hop on both feet outside
