But it did require a war with Great Britain to gain our freedom from the chains they had on our country. We battled for our ability to govern ourselves and have our own laws and regulations, to trade with whoever we pleased and be ourselves. We wanted to pick who our ruler was and decide for ourselves what our destiny was. We didn’t need other people to make our decisions for us because we were becoming independent . We beat Great Britain with some help from our great allies, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. This lead to the creation of the Articles of Confederation, which would eventually fail, but it was our first shot at our own government. For example, The Boston Tea Party lead to a major raise in taxes. That’s only one of the events that the United States figured would work in helping them gain their freedom, but it ended up hurting them more than it helped them. Nothing about the way Americans lived before the Revolution said that we were our own country. They were basically imprisoned by someone on the other side of the world, so they took action to change that. The American Revolution is the reason you and me are here now, the only reason we can proudly say that we are Americans, not Colonists. Also the reason you and I can say that we're free and are not controlled by a
