Rhetorical Analysis In Advertising
In order to graduate with a diploma from a Saudi high school, I had to take a research paper class. A research paper class is where we spend a whole school year working on one research paper. I would consider this as the exigence or the reason behind my need for writing. Another reason would be that I needed to get good grades in that class, which is where my need came from.
We had the first two weeks of class to decide on a topic, which is where I faced most of the constraints. Coming from a conservative society, it wasn’t appropriate to write or speak about certain subjects in school. It is also about pointing out the three main categories of rhetorical analysis, which are exigence, audience, and constraints. Rhetorical analysis is important and can be useful in everyday life. One way is through using rhetorical analysis to understand how advertisements are affecting you. Is the ad making you scared? Is it making you happy? Or is it making you sad? Once you know the answer for questions like this, you will know whether the ad is affecting you positively or negatively. Rhetorical analysis also important because it can help you make good decisions, because it gives you the ability to analyze and understand the exigence of a writing or an ad. It gives you the ability to know whether you are targeted as an audience or not, and to know what constraints the rhetor is facing and how it could affect you as a reader. Now that I have looked back onto a pervious writing experience and analyzed it rhetorically, I cannot help but analyze everything I see from ads and TV shows to articles and newspaper headlines. I personally now believe that being able to rhetorically analyze something helps you have a better understanding of what the rhetor is trying to

    “The Squint and the Wail” is an essay by Michael Hsu. Hsu, a Taiwanese American author and editor, wrote this essay in order to express his views on the negative connotations that occur with some of the racially charged objects present in society. More specifically, the essay deals with the stereotypical nature of The Chin Family. The Chin Family is the name of Stefano Giovannoni’s tabletop collection, which includes salt and pepper shakers that have the caricaturized facial expressions of Chinese people (Giovanni, 404). In this essay, Hsu talks about the appalling nature of the stereotypical features and how those features pose a derogatory inference to Chinese culture, but then reciprocates his views on the tabletop collection to a more neutral stance. Hsu’s main claim is that it is derogatory to exaggerate on the racial-specific physical features of a race and to present that exaggeration to the public under the guise of an everyday tool. Hsu’s piece shows race from a particular perspective and then compares that perspective to the perspectives of the individuals he associates himself with.     In Dinesh D' Souza’s essay, "Two Cheers for Colonialism,” he attempts to convince the audience about several concerns regarding colonialism and Western civilization. He employs various methods to make the audience see his point of view.     Rhetorical strategy is a type of method for writers to manipulate their writing to purpose an idea or influence the reader. Narration, description, and exemplification are some of the rhetorical appeals writer use to grab the reader’s attention. And invoke strong reaction out of the reader.     Today in America many people question whether or not college is truly worth the stress, time, and cost it throws on an individual.     A pregnant mother walks into frame and is placing sharp pins into an infant’s changing pad, as the scene changes she sharpens knives to hang from the infants mobile. The scene changes a few more times showing the mothers actions such as pouring poison into a baby bottle, inserting a child’s fork into an electrical socket, and laying a snake in the infant’s stroller.
