Rhetorical Analysis Of It Starts With Pink And Blue
In the article, “It Starts with Pink and Blue: How Media Shapes Us,” Maryann Garritano (2013) uses the rhetorical patterns of compare and contrast and exemplification in order to communicate her message that the media shapes our characteristics and personalities.
Garritano states that a department store was selling two books: How to be Gorgeous for girls, and How to be Clever for boys, which proves that the media portrays girls as “pretty” and boys as “clever”. She also states that in 2013, Marvel “released t-shirts promoting its popular series The Avengers, with the boys t-shirts reading ‘Be a Hero’ and the girls tees reading ‘I Need A Hero,’”(p.40).
