Technological advancement coupled with increased use of social media has seen the youths accused of ditching what the older generation held in high regard. One such notion has been that the millennials are not reading enough. In her article, Millennials are Outreading Older Generations, Adrienne LaFrance aims to bust this myth and prove the critiques of the youths wrong. Adrienne does not state her credentials to build the article’s credibility but chose to use data from a scientific research on the matter.

She describes today’s children by their love for “selfies and Snapchat” (Adrienne 1). This is the first sentence in the article and it tells the reader right away that the article was about today’s children and how they are judged based on their attachment to their technological gadgets. Also she puts the article in the context of other things that are perceived to be different between the millennials and the older generation. One such idea that was addressed is relationship that the two generations have with the libraries. Unlike other notions that she debunked in the other areas of the article, she gives data to prove that less millenials are visiting the library compared to the older generations of Americans. However, she goes on to give an explanation. The article quotes the study’s finding that the modern Americans are “buying more books that they are borrowing” (Adrianne, 2). The quote thus gives a context whereby we understand why there is perception that the millenials are not reading: they are reading just not in the way the older guys did it, in public areas.
