Ridicule, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, can be a noun or verb meaning words or actions intended to evoke contemptuous laughter at or feeling towards a person or thing. Ridicule is also the title of a 1996 Patrice Leconte directed movie starring Charles Berling and Jean Rochefort. The movie depicts eighteenth century France and the court of Louis XVI at Versailles leading up to the French Revolution. The word Ridicule is both a good title for the movie and a good description of the time leading up to, and one of the causes of, the French Revolution.

In the opening of the movie, we see Milletail literally peeing on this decrepit old man because he believes he was never able to get past the ridicule of being called Stumblebum this man placed on him. Milletail is the man who trips Ponceludon in the end of the movie. Even though Milletail knows the pain and devastation of being ridiculed, yet to salvage his status, he becomes de Blayac's pawn and plays the part.
Throughout the movie, we see everyone in court try and engage in ridicule. It is a game played by all in the court and is puppet mastered by the King. He enjoys not only the battle of wit but also his ability to keep the court at bay by forcing them to play. The King does this for another reason, I believe, as well. By keeping the aristocracy and nobles busy playing this social game, it keeps there attention off France's real problem, their depleted economic state. Everyone wants to please the King and wants to be in his good graces by not only playing this warfare of wits but by being the best at it, by ridiculing everyone else, they forget about their People. All of the nobles and aristocrats are supposed to be leaders of their land and all they do is spend their time and wealth trying to please the King at
