In the book Soldier’s Heart by Gary Paulsen, the main character, Charley, sees some awful things. There are many down falls to war, and the imagery is one of them. Some soldiers aren’t strong enough to take the emotional hit that follows it. Mark Bradford was the artist that I took a look at. His creativity was wonderful abstract, catching my eye piece after piece. The particular artwork that I looked at was his “When We Ride” created in 2006. The media is a mix, which was created into a collage on canvas. The canvas was at its large of 46 3/8 x 62 ¼ inches. This piece of artwork is located in the city of art itself; Los Angeles, California. I believe this canvas collage tells an untold story through contrast and rhythm, light and color, and texture.…

The story I read and am writing my essay on is the book Hoops by Walter Dean Myers. The reason why I am writing this essay is because I like this is a great book. The book is about a seventeen year old boy named Lonnie, faces a difficult life with the harsh nagging of his mom and trying to become pro at basketball. Later on in this book Lonnie faces a really difficult decision if he wants to throw the game or if he wants to beat the opposing team. This is a great book because it teaches about friendship and trust. It also is good because it is exciting to read what decisions the character will make and what will happen after he makes it. This book teaches us how hard it is to live in poor places and other really important things.…

Life is merely a journey. On a journey, an individual experiences a range of obstacles, either expected or unexpected, which shapes their life. Such obstacles initiate the process of change and transformation. Clearly, through a close study of the play ‘Away’ by Michael Gow, the poem ‘Whither will I Wander’ by William Shakespeare and the picture book ‘I had trouble in getting to Solla Sollew’ by Dr Seuss, the characters experience various degrees of change and transformation. Factors that impact on the degree a character changes and transforms include: support networks and the ability or inability to accept reality. Through the use of language and visual techniques, each composer conveys how each character faces a degree of change within their journey.…

Fatalities are part of every person’s life. To a normal citizen, death is often followed by sadness and grief. As portrayed in “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, a soldier has to deal with the situation much differently. Death is portrayed in a negative light due to the fact that soldiers are greatly fearful of it and that they are forced to be unaffected by death. In order to cope with all the deaths he witnessed, O’Brien uses the retelling of war stories to heal from these traumatic events.…

Race is a modern idea that was developed 500 years ago during the slave trade. Europeans believed that enslavement is terrible. Why should anyone be enslaved? They believed that Africans were not true humans and were a lesser human; therefore, Africans can be enslaved. This is how race was developed. Racism is the belief that one race is superior to other races. Racism leads to discrimination because an inferior race should not receive equal rights as the superior race; however, in today’s society, racism and discrimination has been abolished in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s by Martin Luther King Jr. (Nelson and Sydell). Many people believed that the lower class minorities are poor because they did not go to school, and they did not work hard enough; so that is why they are poor. In America, many people believe that everyone has equal opportunities. Is that really true? Does minority really have the same opportunities as the white majority? Minority groups do not have the same opportunity as the white Americans because of the discrimination that is still practiced today even though people deny or do not know it.…
