Is our education the best we can provide for students today? Are students learning necessary facts and steps to lead them to a better future? Will the things students learn in class today forever last in their memory and support what they are doing in the future? These are only a few of the questions we ask our current society today. The world has changed in ways that we can not imagine; form touchscreen computers, to online accounts to share assignments, to even self automated cars! And as the world developed, education was grabbed and changed with it. Our education today is rigorous and the subjects we learn in class is advanced material. But the real question is, after we learn everything, will it help us tomorrow? In the article “Rigor Redefined”, by Tony Wagner, and “Message to My Freshman Students”, by Keith M.Parsons, both explain that our education system today isn’t properly teaching us skills that we will need in our …show more content…
Parsons goes in dept of describing how students learn today. He seems to have enough experience that he gives his message to those who are newly entering college. He wants the students to know the difference between a professor and a teacher. “My job is to lead you to the fountain of knoledge.Weather you drink deeply or only gargle is entireley up to you”(Parsons,p.3). This stunning metaphor is perfect for what he is explaining. He wants the students to know that as a professor he will teach, but it is up to the kids to learn and go further in depth. He also explains that critical learning skills is what most students lack. While hearing what a professor or teacher says, students must learn and perceive what is being said and relate it to the real world. “Your high school curriculum...test-taking”(Parsons,p.7). Most tests given out only shows how well you studied days before the test. After the test everything learned is forgotten and the students move on to learn the next

    I believe that greatness is within all of us; we just need a little help finding it sometimes. I have come to understand that one caring person can make all the difference in someone else’s life.     I truly believe that American education systems are the keystone of American society. One of the most difficult aspects of American education for students is that it is hard to see our learning growth on a daily basis. In an average American school year, each student will spend countless hours doing homework and studying for tests to get a good grade, only to forget 90% of their new knowledge by the following week. After the school year, students will be out of school for a 3 month summer break, and by the time they return to school in September, they have forgot all the random information that they learned the year before.     I am currently in high school and I can tell you that I have not learned a lot of valuable information or real life skills. I can solve quadratic equations and tell you about the war of 1812, but I can’t tell you how to do taxes, or how to budget out money.
