Rime of the Ancient Mariner
The romantic era also viewed as the “age of crisis” occurs from 1750 to 1850. (Eighteenth and nineteenth centuries). It is hard to define the term romanticism. It is the era of movements in the poetry, personal symbols, and abstracts. Romanticism reacts against neoclassicism from the previous centuries. Artists during this period of time produce works that are considered “unusual”. For example, in the novel Frankenstein, Victor criticizes what he was taught at school and what his teachers told him because he wanted to try new things using his imagination, such as reanimating life. It was the period where everything was about how people feel. Freedom of expression was everything for the people who follow romanticism. People who follow the Romantic Movement focus on imagination, individuality which had a full swing in England in the 1760s, spontaneity, and freedom. They express themselves through art, music, poetry, drama, and literature. Romanticism prefers imagination over reason and formal rules. Therefore, romantics are against the rigidity of social structures and rules. Romanticism can be characterized as a movement against the intellectualism and Enlightment from the 18th century. Enlightment focused on reason and logic instead of motions and creativity whereas Romanticism saw diversity in the senses and nature. It influenced the poets to abandon their usual form of verses and diction in favour of a fresher language. For example, the poem “The Tyger” by William blake published in 1794 (during the romantic movement) is an example of romantic art because its style is very new compared to other art works during that period. The general attitudes of the romantics are an enthusiasm for the wild, irregular, and grosque in nature and art. It is during this era that emerged the gothic novel. Moreover, romanticism seeks to find the absolute, the ideal, by transcending the actual. It is a parallel of Victor when he tries to play god and discover the secrets of nature

The Romantic period, year 1785 till 1830 C.E., was a period of great change throughout the world, especially but not only in literary style. This period saw the formation of new countries, new governing styles, and the birth of many new ways of thinking. In this time British Literature was characterized by the work of six major writers, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Percy, Shelly, Keats, and Blake. (Book page 1363-4). Lord Byron, as described by Hipolyte Taine, a French critic of the late romantic, said that Lord Byron was “the greatest and most English of these artists;’ he is so great and so English that from him alone we shall learn more truths…

It is usually thought that great art suffers, if its didactic purpose is over-emphasized. Everyone recognizes that didacticism has something very impressive and effective about it, but no one likes a moral to be offensively obtruded in a work of art. Some go even to the extent of thinking that art and literature should be content to give pleasure and should never set out to teach a truth or preach a moral. There are those who believe that the very appearance of the didactic spirit is fatal to the fascination of a poem.…

Nature is portrayed in one million different ways it can be personified to portray human senses and appearances such as in this poem when Samuel Coleridge puts it in the Old Mariner’s point of view, this done so we as humans can see and relate to the character and also to what the feelings of the man are making you find your emotions. The image of death is represented to portray the fact that the mariner killed the graceful albatross as well as telling his curse of life-in-death, the albatross was a godly creature and its death was punishable by damnation. The boat represents the ship the Mariner and his crew sailed southward on and that the mariner was stuck alone on, the old man is a symbol of the mariner and a vision of what he might have looked like if he were real and the reason the title says ancient mariner his loneliness is shown. The act of crime makes a being completely isolated, lonely. The bird is shown to represent the albatross which is portrayed as an omen of good luck and bad luck in the mariners’ case, the albatross was used as a metaphor for a burden or curse to be carried as penance. Heaven is shown to symbolize the death of the albatross and show the damnation of the mariner because of his crime to god’s creature. The wedding is represented to show the scene where the old man told his story to the wedding guest because the guest was losing his connection to nature just as the mariner did, the difference being the mariner had to reconnect to nature by blessing the water snakes and show his penance. The mariner saved the wedding guest by telling his story, which is why I attempted to portray the images of the poem, because through the mariners’ story is also a lesson to the readers. Nature is important and should not be over looked or taken for granted no matter how annoying nature gets or how much it gets in the way, it is still God’s gift to us and should matter just as much as life itself. that the act…
