Nature is portrayed in one million different ways it can be personified to portray human senses and appearances such as in this poem when Samuel Coleridge puts it in the Old Mariner’s point of view, this done so we as humans can see and relate to the character and also to what the feelings of the man are making you find your emotions. The image of death is represented to portray the fact that the mariner killed the graceful albatross as well as telling his curse of life-in-death, the albatross was a godly creature and its death was punishable by damnation. The boat represents the ship the Mariner and his crew sailed southward on and that the mariner was stuck alone on, the old man is a symbol of the mariner and a vision of what he might have looked like if he were real and the reason the title says ancient mariner his loneliness is shown. The act of crime makes a being completely isolated, lonely. The bird is shown to represent the albatross which is portrayed as an omen of good luck and bad luck in the mariners’ case, the albatross was used as a metaphor for a burden or curse to be carried as penance. Heaven is shown to symbolize the death of the albatross and show the damnation of the mariner because of his crime to god’s creature. The wedding is represented to show the scene where the old man told his story to the wedding guest because the guest was losing his connection to nature just as the mariner did, the difference being the mariner had to reconnect to nature by blessing the water snakes and show his penance. The mariner saved the wedding guest by telling his story, which is why I attempted to portray the images of the poem, because through the mariners’ story is also a lesson to the readers.
