Rise of the Machines
20th December, 2150 The end is coming quickly.
At first I thought it would be because of an unexpected virus that would spread and kill all mankind. No fuss somehow. Or a battalion of unknown species would land on our planet, take it and destroy all living matter in sight. I imagine weird creatures flying even more ridiculous things. But I was sort of disappointed. Humankind wanted a cruel finale. Bombs are everywhere. Merciless androids are roaming around shedding innocent blood. Deafening sounds became incessant. How come it all turned to this? We’ve been hiding since they claim authority over the Earth. At first, some brave men attempted to bring them down, restore what is rightfully ours but their strengths and machineries simply wasn’t enough. We still need to level with the technology they have. Sir Lasky, our leader, ordered us to stay underground where no device could detect our presence. Everyone is paying close attention to any signs of the enemy. Our senses strengthened the longer we stayed hidden.
My family was gone. I came home to find them lying on their pool of blood. I didn’t know when or how it happened, but I have a pretty good idea who did it. I wept and was lost for a moment until Sir Lasky found me. He took me to the other survivors. Since then I knew life would no longer be easy. I trained with the other youths. We were taught how to hold weapons and protect ourselves. No day would pass by without us getting bruised. If things were normal I would say it was cool. But in these times when lives are at stake I realize it isn’t. I wanted to keep my faith, to hope that maybe things would be better. But I can’t. Hope now is just a word, it’s meaning forgotten. At this moment, I’m waiting for the end to come with my hand firm on my fully loaded gun. (Twinnie Urlanda- SEd 1-1)

In John F. Kasson’s “Civilizing the Machine,” Kasson enlightens his audience that cities did not create factories, factories created cities. During the dawn of the British Industrial Revolution, the Americans began to adopt their own form of this event through the creations of factories and water-powered generators which, at the beginning of the time, revolved around the New England/ Boston area. Kasson explains through his article of the various entrepreneurs who founded these first factories and the then goes on to describe the positive and negative effects this had on people of these areas. On a more broad perspective, he argues for claim that this first step towards modern day industrialization, although it accommodated to the region, changed the land significantly. Kasson also infers that the protests of this event led to the growing population of Irish.…

“Suck it up soldier.” my mother will always tell me, from tough times to a scrape on the knee this has always been what I have been told. Though it may have led to my ability to persevere or my emotional unavailability, I will always try to keep this close in mind. I, Lilli Ambort, am a 14 year old girl born on September 7th, 2000. I have an older sister of 3 minutes, and a younger sister of 13 years. I have two dogs: Ava and Buster, and two cats: Clara and Claws. Unfortunately, when people lose hope one often gives up but it should always be kept and held on to. When everyone is gathered on the roof “[n]o one wants to accept the situation as last,” (Steveson 377). People are too quick to give up hope. People all think that when the worst comes that it is the ned that there is no hope but yet, if one thinks positive and keeps hope in the survival and that everything will be okay, then it might just happen that the hopes will come true. If there is nothing left, always hold on to hope. It shows that the characters in “Notes From a Bottle,” all gave up and lost hope when they thought there was nothing left, when really the characters need to hope and stick together to make it through rough times.…

Fear doesn’t describe what I went through while serving the Lord as a M, in Northern Africa. My family and I where in the middle of a civil war, between Rebels and the President’s forces after being in the country for only three weeks. Gunfire, sounds of tanks shooting their guns and RPG’s flying through the sky happened throughout the day. The first night of the civil war, thieves decided to take the opportunity to invade our home while there was no police force; because they were helping the army fight the war. After going through a home…

I believe in hope. I’m not talking the kind of hope you have when you are “hoping” for a new car to just appear in your driveway, or the kind of hope you have when you “hope” for a new job. No. I am talking about the hope that is necessary for survival. That hope which allows you to persevere through hardships in life because you believe-you know-that there is something better waiting on down the road. This is the hope I believe we all must have, and I found this hope for the very first time when I was just 12.…

I awoke up on the morning of November 3, 2004 with the alarm sirens blaring of an impending attack on our base which was a frequent occurrence on a daily basis. I was rushing to the bunkers but never made it in time as several mortars landed in the vicinity of the bunker. I was knocked to the ground, received some shrapnel to my leg as well as an injury to my knee. Can you imagine going through such an experience? I was dazed, confused and not really sure where I was or what had just happened. I was treated at the field hospital but not airlifted out of the combat area. I refused to go as I was not going to leave my fellow brother and sisters in arms.…
