Rising Threat Of Terrorism In Australia
My fellow Australians, there is no more pressing matter of national and international security than reducing the threat from terrorism in our nation. Australia has strong, well-coordinated counter-terrorism arrangements; many plots, some major have been disrupted and there has been no large scale terrorist attack on Australian soil in the post-2001 period thanks to our Government. Ever since September 11, Australia has been involved in the War against Terror, however recent events have shown the rising threat of terrorism within Australia.
There have been at least two terror attacks in 2014 such as the Endeavour Hills stabbings and the Sydney hostage crisis. Not only are terrorists getting younger, but they are getting more violent and more

Since terrorism evokes fear through a threat to security the Australian Security Intelligence Agency (ASIO) is an organization that would be directly affected by any legal remedies through legislative amendments to combat terrorism. An important legal response to terrorism has been the Anti-terrorism Act (Cth) 2005. The origins of this legislation began in 2002 when John Howard introduced the Australian Security Intelligence Organization Legislation Amendment (Terrorism) Bill 2002. Although, it caused a lot of controversial issues in relation to significant changes to ASIO and police powers that would imperil rule of law and the rights of citizens; it would seem evident that increased powers to law enforcement can only benefit the protection of Australian citizens as seen by further amendments to this bill made in 2003. These amendments included a widen of the definition of terrorist offences and enhancing ASIO Australian Federal Police (AFP) powers in questioning and detaining people in order to engage in an ‘appropriate form of interrogation’ for intelligence gathering on terrorists…

By 1932, crop prices had dropped per bushel to corn, three cents; oats, six cents; barley, ten cents; and wheat, sixteen cents (terkel-a0a0o8-a.mp3). Farmers thought that if supply could be stopped then the prices would be driven up, leading to the farm holiday movement (terkel-a0a0o4-a.mp3). Men would stop other farmers on highways and destroy produce in an attempt to stop the farm economy (terkel-a0a0o4-a.mp3). In one case, a railroad bridge was burned to stop produce from going to market (terkel-a0a0o5-a.mp3). These acts can be looked at as a form of domestic terrorism. The farmers had been pushed beyond the point of desperation to the point of radicalism. One story, told by former South Dakota Senator Emil Loriks, claims that when a man…

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, securing the country has become a national priority. The events of 9/11 were the first attacks on the United States (U.S.) since Pearl Harbor which catapulted the U.S. into World War II. As of the writing of this paper, the U.S. has been engaged in the War on Terrorism for 13 years. During this period of time the U.S. has been kept free from terrorist attacks by changes to laws, technology, and investigative methods to combat terrorism internationally. Although there have been a number of changes to U.S. law and American citizens have been kept safe, the threat of terrorism has not abated. With the continued threat of terrorism to the U.S. and its citizens, there is a high probability that the U.S. will suffer another 9/11 type of event.…

Before September 11, 2001 many Americans did not think about a terrorist threat on a daily basis. The thought of a terrorist attack seemed like something that happens only in third world, war torn countries. The terrorist attacks on American soil that day made the idea of a terrorist attack very real. September 11, 2001 not only made average citizens think about the threat of terrorist attacks but the American government as well. The Bush administration had to be quick to respond to the fears and concerns of the American people. The people needed to feel like there was a government with a plan to keep the citizens safe.…

Since the successful attacks by planned by Osama Bin Laden, and carried out by Al Qaeda terrorists, the United States of America has implemented new strategies to thwart efforts by terrorist to achieve another successful attack on US soil. Along with the new Global War on Terrorism, came new laws, different executive orders, and the implementation of the Department of Homeland Security to combat terrorism and to strengthen the nation's national security. According to James Carafano and Jessica Zuckerman, “There is little doubt that the United States is safer than it was on September 10, 2001—at least 40 terror plots against the U.S. have been foiled since 9/11—but the war on terrorism is not yet won” (Carafano and Zuckerman 2011, par.2). After many successes, at least 40 foiled plots said by Carafano and Zuckerman, the United States has monitored and compiled a list of suspected terrorist organizations both foreign and domestic. However, the US has recently began to slow down their efforts in national security interest. Under the leadership of the Obama Administration, there have been many defense cuts, a refusal to secure US borders, and a foreign policy that has caused more instability in the Middle East than ever before. This has given rise to more hatred for the hegemonic United States government by Islamic extremists, and has left the United States susceptible to three major types of terrorist attacks that are likely to occur on American soil.…

Because of its inviting attitude towards everyone, Canada attracts people from all over the world. Many come here to admire its natural beauty while some come here to settle down and start a new life. This welcoming attitude may benefit Canada’s economy but it also makes Canada vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Canada is not immune to terror attack and Canada is no stranger to it. Canada faced its first terror attack in June 23, 1985. It was an Air India flight 182. The flight was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 307 passengers and 22 crew members. Even thought it was one of the deadliest terror attack in Canada, things really started to shift after the attack on United States on September 11, 2001. Canada’s foreign policy changed a lot and it was time to put the safety first for the citizens of its country. A strong defense system and border security can stop people entering Canada who impose danger to its citizens. However, a security challenge Canada faces is its home grown terrorist. It is no easy task to monitor every single citizens of its country. Center for technology and National Security Policy National Defense University published a report in May 2008 explaining what homegrown terrorism is. Homegrown terrorism or the threat within is when an individual or a group of a country are willing to attack their own. Homegrown terrorism does not mean an immigrant who immigrated to a country and is willing to hurt the people of that country anymore. According to Canadian terrorist experts and Canadian Security and Intelligence Services (CSIS) a homegrown terrorist is most likely a lone wolf. These kind of people fail to socialize with others and are targeted by foreign terrorist groups. They recruit these lone wolves and use them to take on attacks. A homegrown terrorist can be a born citizen of the country…

As the environment changes around terrorist groups so too must the groups themselves. As they evolve, new tactics found to be most effective are quickly adopted and overtime become trends. For example, suicide bombings have become an enduring symbol of terrorism. Despite the decline in the use of this tactic, it still has the same stinging effect when used. The recent suicide bombings in Istanbul are evidence of this fact. It remains to be seen if recent trends in terrorism (i.e. cyber-attacks or foreign fighters) will have the same effect, however, the increased use of children in terrorist operations will likely remain and increase over time.…
