Terrorism Kristina Ransom HIS/135 March 17, 2013 John Spatharos

Terrorism is the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear (The free dictionary. 2013). Terrorism is definitely not a new problem in today’s society and the threat of terrorism will, undoubtedly, persist. Terrorism has been one of the greatest global challenges to international peace, stability and security since perhaps the beginning of time, or at least 20,000 years ago when Cain killed his brother Able. The attack on September 11th, 2001 was certainly not the beginning of terrorism. However, since the 9/11 attack, America has changed incredibly from many American’s beliefs, how we think and feel to even air travel. Some of those changes were instantaneous, some were temporary, and some are lasting, in which we are still facing, whatever the case may be, there were definite changes. The most significant change that many are still facing is the fear. The terrorists instilled fear in thousands of Americans. Each and every terrorist attack, no matter where and how extreme it is, will have an impact on the society of the attack.

Terrorism is not unique to contemporary society, the term ‘terrorism’ and ‘terrorist’ date back to the late 18th Century (Laqueur 1987 as cited in Newburn 2007, p. 871). Defining the word ‘terrorism’ is a difficult task; Walter Laqueur is said to have counted over 100 definitions of terrorism and he concluded that the only general characteristics that are most often agreed upon are that terrorism involves violence and the threat of violence (Laqueur, 1999 as cited in Furedi 2007). Although these are not new terms to society, it is important to analyse any changes in the representation, of the words ‘terrorism’ and ‘terrorist’ since the events on 9/11. The perceptions that individuals in society have and…

But then, experiencing and witnessing the feeling of losing the one you loved who was a victim of that disaster, I recognized that the world is no longer as safe as before. Today, not only America but also Britain, Spain, Indonesia…became the target of terrorists. The terror tissue is the most challenged thing for all the governments to solve. However, terrorism is difficult to define because the meaning of the term has changed so frequently over the past 200 years. It has morphed from positive connotation during the French Revolution (closely associated with the ideals of virtue and democracy ), through the revolutionary movement and finally to a religiously motivated act as it is mainly perceived today. Nevertheless, we have to ask ourselves whether "old" and "new" terrorism really exists, or maybe the phenomenon we are facing today reminds us an old wine in a new bottle.…

The high point of the first wave of international terrorist activity occurred in the 18905, sometimes called the golden Age of assassination when monarch, prime ministers, and presidents were struck down, one after another, usually by assassins who moved easily across international borders (Burleigh, 2009). Anarchy is a crime against the whole human race, and all mankind should band together against the anarchist. His crimes should be made a crime against the law of nations declared by treaties among all civilized powers.
