Longbows were said to have been brought to England through Wales in the 1200s, and were commonly made with yew wood in Wales, however a lack of yew trees in England led to the longbow commonly being made from ash or elm trees. The longbow was six feet long and its arrows were three feet long. The arrow would either be broad tipped or narrow tipped, depending on if the arrows were to be used against infantry armour or a knight’s plate armour. The longbow was key in the success of the English in the Hundred Year’s War as they allowed the English army to attack French ships from a much farther distance than what they would have been able to do with the shortbow. The longbow was also instrumental in the Battle of Crecy in 1346, archers were able to kill over 30 000 French militia with only 100 English casualties.
