What does ‘prole’ mean? The Oxford dictionaries describes ‘prole’ as ‘a member of the working class.’ The book 1984 portrays the Proles in similar way, who are weak, animal-like, working class people. The Proles in 1984 are the vast majority (85%) of the populace, but they do not have a significant part in the novel. The Proles live in a deserted area which is described as very filthy, “He was walking up a cobbled street of little two-storey houses with battered doorways which gave straight on the pavement and which were somehow curiously suggestive of rat holes” (Orwell, 86) Furthermore, Orwell represented the Proles as “swollen, waddling women” and “old bent creatures shuffling along on splayed feet” (Orwell, 86) which shows that they…

Within the novel 1984 lie multiple characters, some more complex than others, but one character truly stands out above the rest, Julia. Julia is quite young and mostly obeys the Party’s rules, she usually defies the little rules but claims to be breaking the “big” ones. Julia makes it clear that she hates the Party, yet does not want them to be eradicated? Surely Julia keeps heads spinning, this is certainly true in Winston's case. Winston is quite special himself, at the beginning of 1984, the feelings he felt towards Julia were more or less violent.…

1984, by George Orwell, comes off as very bleak and grey, as it was intended to be portrayed to the reader. This helps us to understand that the world Winston Smith is living in is grey, depressing and overall quite commonplace. A place where he always has to look over his shoulder to make sure that the omnipotent Big Brother won't catch a minor slip of a few choice words or see him flirt with the woman across the way. Orwell successfully accomplishes this through his use of literary methods.…

I’d believe Winston to be a human trying to make a change. He gave in at the end and loved Big Brother but this was from the torture and mind control that he endured from O’Brien, he always knew this would be the outcome from his diary entries, conversations with Julia and his observations of Jones, Aaronson and Rutherford at the Chestnut Tree Cafe. Breaking his only promise to Julia, not to betray her, was unable to be avoided, seeing his rantings after his visit to room 101, and the brief encounter with Julia when he is released. She betrayed him too. Everyone betrays everyone. This was room 101’s purpose. To remove everything and everyone you love except Big Brother.…

All societies are controlled by their government in many different ways. Many societies are controlled by a democratic government, while other societies are controlled by dictatorship. These styles of government both have pros and cons. The passage from "1984" by George Orwell distinctly shows that society is a horrible and harmful place to live in because there are certain rules that people have to follow. "It was Mrs. Parsons, the wife of a neighbor on the same floor (" Mrs was a word somewhat discountenanced by the Party- you were supposed to call everyone "comrade"- but with some women one used it instinctively)"( Orwell paragraph 2). In this part of the passage, it is told that there are rules that are needed to be followed in society,…

On the one hand, the proles have enough power to successfully rebel against the party. The proles take up "Eighty-five percent of the population of Oceania" (Orwell 69). Their high number gives them an advantage over the party. Since there is a small number of party members, they wouldn't be able to win against the proles' manpower. Another advantage they have over INGSOC is, since "the majority of the proles [do] not even have telescreens in their homes" (Orwell 71) they have liberty over their thoughts. They don't have to take caution when having thoughts the party would consider heretical. This is advantageous to them because they can plan a rebellion without the party finding out. Thus, the proles have the power to successfully plot and…

Throughout the history of the human being, there have been many different views on which way one should be ordered or governed. And still to this day, the answer to this question varies immensely throughout many societies around the world. In the novel 1984, the author George Orwell continuously highlights the societal issue of control and power as he warns of what will happen in the futuristic, dystopian society.
