* Delegate- Congress should vote on what the public want. For example if a congressman is against abortion but 60% of the public are for abortion. Then the congressman has to vote for it.…
The Constitutional Convention delegates were from a variety of different backgrounds and different political views. They held a debate about how many representatives would be acceptable for each state to have. The states with a large population preferred the Virginia Plan. This plan allows for each state to have a different number of representatives based on the population. The states with a smaller population preferred the New Jersey Plan. The New Jersey Plan states that each state would have the same number of representatives. A delegate from Connecticut proposed a two-house legislature as a compromise. This compromise set the foundation for the Senate and a House of Representatives. The states with a smaller population favored the Senate…
As of now, we only have two different democratic representation models: trustee and delegate. The trustee model says that representatives should be allowed to use their own judgment when deciding upon how they will vote on particular legislation. A trustee tries to lead his/her constituents, rather than follow them. Trustees are willing to run the risk of losing re-election if that means voting for the right thing, and I respect that.…
I believe that Congress should use both models. There are times when both models could be useful. The Delegate Model should be used the most. We elect the men and women we put in Congress, which means that they work for us. Some Congressional Members get to Washington DC and completely forget this. It is our right as a citizen to vote them out of office. The Delegate Model should also be utilized when making decisions about Taxes. Another issues in America where the Delegate Model should be used is gun control. Although Congressional Members do work for the citizens they represent, there are some issues when a Congressional Member might not agree with their party or the beliefs of the members within their district. During those times, The Trustee Model comes into play. One if the biggest issues where a Congressional Member needs to use the Trustee Model is the issue of gay marriage. On average most Republicans don’t support this issue, but there are some members of Congress that do. Another issue where they should use the Trustee model is the issue of the debt ceiling. Again this is an issue that separate the American people by party. Most Republicans don’t want to raise the debt ceiling but there are certain issues where a Congressional Member has to go with what is best for his people in his distract. One of the most important issues is the issue of terrorism. The American people don’t always the information when it comes to our safety. During this time Congressional Members must use the Trustee Model.…
When in a political position, one is most generally tasked with difficult decisions that require a long, hard look at what really matters. There are two ways a person of this position can view a problem in order to make an informed decision. The trustee view model of representation allows the political position holder to have a broader view of what is important to society as a whole, while voting against narrow interests of constituents. This view also takes into consideration the politician’s personal views, morals, and perceptions. This way of representation could cause problems with constituents that elected the legislator to support their big political views, but the legislator feels that they have the best opinion and interests of the people in mind despite negative consequences. The instructed-delegate view model of representation focuses on the views of the overall voters who had elected him or her according to views of constituents regardless of personal beliefs. This legislator would be more of someone that looks at what congress sees and does not give much thought of how it would affect local communities or the state. This view has the constituent’s interests in mind.…

Parliament is designed to hold the executive accountable; therefore it goes about this by various means of government scrutiny, such as Prime Minister’s Question Time. There are several important functions that Parliament must perform. The word Parliament derived from the Latin ‘parliamentum’ and the French word ‘parler’ which originally meant a talk- which is what Parliament does most of the time. Parliament consists of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Monarchy. Parliament is the highest judicial, legislative and executive body in Britain. A parliamentary form of government acknowledges that it derives its power directly from the consent of the people. This sort of system ensures democracy and an active interaction between the people and their representatives. The three functions that I am going to focus on are Scrutiny, Representation and Law Making.…
If a delegate is elected into office, citizens can be assured that their elected official will work to represent them and have their issues and concerns heard in the upper levels of government. Electing a delegate proves to make the district’s citizens happy as well since delegates tend to have some of the highest re-election rates in their districts. High re-election rates among delegate Congressmen may be due to the high satisfaction rate among citizens when they recognize that their concerns have been recognized in higher levels of government thanks to the help of delegates making sure that the voices of those in their districts are heard.…
The role of the citizen legislature is to work within a political culture with a strong suspicion of government and a history of accepting the involvement of wealthy businesses in politics. The Texas Constitution creates this part-time legislature that meets for a relatively brief 140 days every other year. This legislature receives most of their income from outside sources. Together these institutional and cultural forces have limited the ability of the legislature to fully play its representational role.…
