Women in the Eyes of Society To ignore the differences we have in society is the same as trying to steer clear of an earthquake, it’s impossible to avoid. Looking for the differences between men and women and their way of communication is a trending topic everywhere. Women today speak to others with the intent of keeping others feelings and wants in mind, and this way of communication has been passed down for centuries. In, “His Politeness is Her Powerlessness”, Deborah Tannen goes into an in-depth analysis of the difference of communication between men and women, but specifically focuses on the woman’s mentality and way of communication and the effects and outcomes because of it. By focusing on one sex, you can distinguish the significant difference there is between men and woman besides gender.
There are reasonable questions for this essay, like why focus on women? Men can be explained just as methodically as women. The reason for focusing on women rather than men in this essay is that women are perceived to be more vulnerable and have a capability of holding more in, so there is more to explore into for communication differences. People judge you of the way you speak. They pick your brain till they find that weak spot to get what they want out of you; and basically your communication defines the kind of person you are to them. If you are soft spoken or shy, they see you are vulnerable. In this essay, right of the bat, Tannen indicates: “Because they are not struggling to be one-up, women often find themselves framed one-down.” In today’s society, women are held with the upmost respect, but or still perceived in a lower class than men. In the eyes of the average person, women can still be treated with the same amount of respect and equality, but in the back of their minds, there is a pyramid for position in society, and women are always put behind men on it.
