Roman Dental Hygiene
Dentistry and oral hygiene in Ancient Roman time was very different back then, then it is now. A lot has changed since their time, for example methods, tools, and medication.
Back in Roman time there was no dentists, toothpaste or toothbrushes. Romans would use toothpicks, rags, and chewing sticks to help keep their teeth to stay intact. Back then, the Romans used urine for toothpaste, they would use others urine and their own. Romans would brush their teeth with the urine and the urine would help whiten their teeth. The chewing sticks, they would use to chew on to keep their teeth nice and strong and the rags would be used for taking soap, or urine and scrubbing their teeth, the rags were a replacement to them for not having toothbrushes.

Ancient Romans also would make gold teeth for teeth cosmetic, but then would pull the gold teeth out when someone passed away, because it was a rule in their culture. Romans made many of their own pain medication for the teeth, they would use worms, crow and brains of frogs. The most popular medication was call opium, which they used if they had to pull a tooth out or doing anything painful in the mouth. Since dentist position did not exist back then and there needed to be a tooth pulled or removed that position was turned over to a barber. The barbers would use leeches if they need to do a tooth extraction, they would also remove loose teeth, rotten teeth and decayed teeth, since there was no formal medication for helping those things from happening.
