Roman (A.D 54-68) : For centuries, Roman Emperor Nero is said to have sent slaves to go collect snow from the mountains. They would flavor the snow with nectar, fruit pulp, and honey to make something similar to a snow cone. Though this widely told tale may be a myth this is the earliest know "ice cream" we know of.
Chinese (A.D 618-907) : Ice cream dates back to China's T'ang period, probably a dish for the country's rulers. King T'ang of Shang kept 94 "ice men" on hand to lug ice to the palace to make a dish made of koumiss (heated, fermented milk), flour, and camphor.
American (1744) : American colonist brought back recipes form Europe . On May 19, 1744, a group of VIP's dinned in the home of Maryland Governor, Thomas Bladen. One of the guest described "a Desert... Among the Rarities of which it was Compos'd, was some fine ice Cream which, with the Strawberries and Milk, eat most deliciously." He had a surplus of cream, so he built an ice cream factory in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, and shipped the ice cream to Baltimore by train. Business boomed, and Fussell became the father of ice cream.
American (1939) : Grocery stores didn't start selling ice cream till the 1930's. By that time ice cream had become so popular that it was known as an American symbol. In 1943 the U.S Armed Forces were the worlds largest ice cream manufactures.
