Thesis: In William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, Nurse causes problems due to dishonesty; however, she is victimized when other characters take advantage of her.
The Nurse is taken advantage of in many parts of the story. Juliet takes advantage of their relationship when she wants the Nurse to go out and talk to Romeo about the marriage. (Act 2, Sc. 4) This proves that she is a victim but she is also Juliet’s servant. Although no matter what Juliet should be kind and not make Nurse do all of her work for her. Mercutio is very rude to the Nurse in this Act making her very angry due to name calling and other harassment. He treats Nurse like she isn’t even human, he is extremely rude and stuck up. (Act 2 Sc. 4) She likes both Romeo and Paris which causes conflict between the family. She becomes disliked by either the parents or Juliet. This puts her in a bad spot. Having to choose between the two men will ultimately hurt her and those around her in the end. She is targeted with hate and anger due to choosing a side. In Act four scene two, Nurse is put on the spot by the Capulet’s. In Act three scene three Nurse is taken advantage of by Romeo. He is being very childish and tries to stab himself with a dagger and Nurse has to prevent it. He has very little time to apologize to Juliet about his murdering of Tybalt. Nurse gives him a ring and tells him to make haste. In my opinion his last resort was Nurse and he was counting on her which, in the end, put her in a terrible spot.
Nurse is also conceived as a villain in the story as well. She is always hiding secrets from certain people just to make Juliet happy. In Act two scene four, Nurse is rude to Mercutio and Romeo. Although Mercutio may deserve it, Romeo did nothing wrong. It was very disrespectful of her as they are of a higher social class than she. In Act two scene four, Juliet informs Nurse that she wants to marry Romeo. Nurse’s duty is to talk to the parents to see if
