Romeo And Tybalt Character Analysis

Tybalt is at fault for his own death because he has killed other people before his death. Romeo exclaims to Tybalt, after Tybalt killed Mercutio, “He’s alive and victorious, and Mercutio’s dead?” (3.1.84). In this quote, Romeo is yelling that a great person was just killed by Tybalt, who shouldn’t be alive for killing Mercutio. When he is already known for his fighting and he had killed other people before, he will have a target on his back. Romeo is mad at Tybalt because he had just killed Mercutio, his friend. After killing Mercutio, Tybalt came back to fight Romeo. He didn’t want to leave and run away, Tybalt ran back to fight Romeo. Tybalt has just killed someone, now does he wants to kill again? When a grudge has been held on for so long, a hatred will form. Tybalt starts his grudge by saying, “Patience perforce with willful choler meeting Makes my flesh tremble in their different greeting. I will withdraw, but this intrusion shall Now seeming sweet, convert to bitterest gall” (1.5.88-91). In this quote, Tybalt is talking to himself saying that he will never forget when Romeo barged into a Capulet party. Romeo is a Montague, the rival family to the Capulets. The hatred that would lead to his own death started with this grudge. Romeo didn’t do anything to hurt the Capulets, but Tybalt didn’t like his presence. Tybalt got angry at a party over nothing. Tybalt sent a letter to Romeo’s home challenging him to quarrel. A fight that Tybalt would start and Romeo would finish. If Tybalt didn’t want to die, why would he send a message for a duel? A fight all started with a grudge that should never have happened. None of the other Capulets cared that Romeo was there, but Tybalt did. He wanted to fight, and Romeo didn’t.
