Man vs Himself consisted of Emily and herself. Emily did not want to accept the fact that her father was dead “She told them that her father was not dead”. (Norton’s Literature 311) She didn’t even want them to take his body away. Emily had a strong connection to her father. He always was there to protect her and make sure she was okay. With her father being in control Emily seemed to be too good for anyone “None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such”. (Norton’s Literature 311) Emily didn’t want to process the death of her father. Therefore, she needed someone else to be with, almost like a replacement for her father. This where she met Homer Barron. She then falls in love with Homer, but he is more into the company of men. She then poisons him so that he won’t leave her.

Emily falls in love with him Homer, but Homer isn’t as interested as she is. Now Emily cares about her representation so she wouldn’t want anything to destroy it. The town doesn’t like Homer Barron. It appears to be of the working class as he was seen working on a sidewalk project. The town also thinks that they are sleeping together. These are two factors that would ruin Emily’s representation and she would want that so she poisons him.
