Roy Smarter Chapter Summaries
ROY SLATER (20’s) is a hopeful screenwriter, working in a bank. He lets his imagination run away with him as he fantasizes about the bank being robbed. Roy strikes up a friendship and romance with bank teller JENNY FLYNN. Their boss JOHN isn’t happy about their relationship.

When Roy’s mother dies, he promises to keep the house and make her proud. Roy’s friends, ELIJAH WASHINGTON, a struggling African American actor, and BERNIE ADELMAN, a stand-up comedian, all stress over their finances.

When John fires Roy, he tries to find a job, but can’t. He tries to get a loan, but is turned down. Roy comes up with an idea: rob a bank.

They search the gym lockers, but all they find is a note, telling them to try again. Gus knows that Roy is playing a game with him.

The men feel guilty about robbing the bank. Elijah tells Lenore the truth about the church and his actions. Bernie also confesses the truth to Emma. She tells him to give the money back.

Roy finishes his screenplay and gets a producer to read it. They like the script. Roy begs Jenny to take him back. He thinks he has a way to make everything already. He loves her and doesn’t want to spend his life without her. Jenny is hopeful.

Gus retires from the department, but at his retirement party, he gets a call from Roy, who disguises his voice with the accent he used in the robbery. He tells Gus to watch the news. The news reports that mysterious donations were made to three charities: a juvenile detention facility, a dog rescue agency, and a medical clinic. In total, it’s almost one million dollars. Gus and Joe know that the men got away with robbery, but there’s nothing they can do.

Bernie surprises Emma. He’s fixed the problem and has enrolled in medical school. He wants a second chance with Emma. Emma thinks he has a very good chance to start

Both work hard and diligently against the spread of diseases just like Semmelweis who is mentioned in the chapter. Something I learned, that not many realize, is that each year two million people acquire an infection while they are in the hospital. Mainly because the clinicians only wash their hands one-third to one-half as many times as they should. Semmelweis, mentioned earlier, concluded in 1847 that doctors themselves were to blame for childbed fever, which was the leading cause of maternal death in childbirth. The best solutions are apparently the sanitizing gels that have only recently caught on in the U.S. Then there was an initiative to make the sanitizing easier for all. The engineer Perreiah came up with solutions that gave the staff more time which was revolutionary in itself but the format worked only under his supervision. After he left it all went down the drain, so, Lloyd a surgeon who had helped Perreiah decided to do more research and was excited when he encountered the positive deviance idea, the idea of building on people’s capabilities instead of trying to change them. The idea worked and even got funding for ten more hospitals across the country. At the end of the chapter Dr.Gawande ponders upon the idea of how many he has infected because of his lack of cleansing.…
