The next adventure we had planned; snorkeling in Turtle Town. Putting on a ton of sunscreen, we headed off to the dock to board our boat. We then heard a voice.…
The splashes of the freezing spillway mixed with the cold wind coming off the water sent chills down my back. I yawned, the loud purr of the tugboat next to us made it impossible to hear my uncle ask if I was tired. We were passing the train of barges right after we left the launch and were headed into the woods. I have done all this before. It was all familiar to me. The only difference was that I had never been out here this early. The eerie white light of the moon was the only thing that let us see right now. Luckily for us the moon was huge and full tonight. It was about 4:30 in the morning and we were speeding into the swamps of the spillway. I looked at my uncle and I saw him standing up, driving the boat, with a smile on his face. This was his job and he loved it. When you love the wilderness, being out in the woods for eight hours a day was a treat. Especially when it ended with picking up a paycheck of about a thousand dollars at the end of each of those days.…
A character in a novel has a way of helping to move the plot forward. They provide whatever the plot needs whether it be comedic relief, drama, anger, or a push of action to get the plot moving forward. The novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain is set in the American South in the 1850s. In the novel, Huck Finn fakes his death and runs away with Jim, a runaway slave. During the late 30s and early 40s Duck Island was the place to go to hang out and forget about it all. A place full of nature and fun but it had a very unexpected twist hidden in the bushes. November 8, 1938, Vincenzo Tonzillo, 20, and Mary Myatovich 15, became the first victims of the phantom. Another couple down the walk heard the screams and found Tonzillo dead in a pool of blood, by their car. Myatovich however, was still inside the car as if she was planted there, bloody but somehow still alive.…
Sometimes, I thought back twelve years ago, when I faced general Zaroff and got in a hunt with him, the most dangerous game. The fight had changed me forever. As I remembered, I did not know what fear was when I was on the ship with Whitney, my old friend. When I heard him said there was a mysterious island near the Caribbean Sea, I had the urge to come and see what it was. Somehow, God made me falling the ship and faced general Zaroff, faced my destiny. After coming back from that dreadful island, I found myself not taking hunting as serious as before. Maybe I changed my mind and believed that animals have feelings.…
I’m soon met by another family instead this time it was a family of geese. They were making their way down the stream—little ones following behind—and into a humongous algae pond. I follow swiftly behind them; I jog to keep up with their paddling. I make it past a small clearing from all the shrubbery and bamboo to get a good look at them swimming. Single file, they glide across the water like a tiny unit; This sweet moment doesn’t last long. Out of nowhere, this large golden beast makes a huge splash that startles the family of geese. Momma goose soon turns into momma bear and pounces on whatever caused the startle. Me being the curious monkey that I am, went to go check out the commotion. Eyes darting about, I find a peculiar set of smooth stepping stones that’ll take me out into the water. Hopping from stone to stone, I make my way closer to the family of geese. Finally I get close enough to take a good look at the culprit ,and to my surprise it was a goldfish except this goldfish was ten times bigger than anyone I’ve seen. Soon I realized this wasn’t a goldfish but a Koi fish; he was even bigger up close. I wasn’t sure if they are omnivores, but they could have easily swallowed one of the baby geese whole. Thankfully the momma goose was there so I didn’t have to find…
I awoke in the early hours of the morning as usual. The air was thick and wet, but the day’s hunt wouldn’t wait. I got up and stretched my legs before checking the traps I set the evening before. The forest seemed unsettlingly too quiet. Did I wake up earlier than I usually would have? I walked down to the waterhole, to see if any of my nets were filled. There was a soft mist over the shallows, creating an ominous feel. I checked up and down the banks, but my nets had all vanished. With the sounding of the raven’s caw, I decided to head back up to camp. I heard a quick rattle in the leaves due east of my position, so I made haste to draw my bow and hold her steady in firing position. My breath was heavy as the musk in the air poured into my lungs.…
Mikayla and I decided to interview Irene Gilgoff from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. Also known as PMMC, the center was founded in 1971, as a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine mammals stranded along the Orange County coastline and to increase public awareness of the marine environment through education and research.…
At this point I didn’t think we would have been rescued, as I agree with Ralphs thoughts. “If only they could get a message to us” (Golding 94). I know Ralph was very ominous about me and didn’t like me much because I was on Jacks side; but I still shared the same thoughts as him. I felt like the people who were supposed to be looking for us, must have given up cause they thought we were musty now. Everyone lost their mind, a couple boys died because they went of the deep end. Others ended up killing each other or starving to death because they couldn’t stand anybody. As for me, I just planned to keep going until I had had enough of those…
It was an oddly quiet Sunday morning in the middle of December. Clear skies, forests and beautiful snow-capped mountains dominated the views from my front porch. The temperature was mild, one of those days you could wear a thin sweater and be a little chilly. There were no birds chirping or butterflies fluttering, as they had all left to the south to find a more suitable environment for them or died. I had missed this type of day when you could relax in the peacefulness of the quiet morning…

What I have learned from being on my own away from the world is that It’s horrible. Like you have nobody to talk you're just bored and that we need these modern things in our life to survive because It’s hard without it. I thought it would have been fun to be out in the wild all by myself, but it’s not I wish I would have brought you we could have hunted together learn how to do certain things to survive out here. One of the exciting parts of my journey I shot a moose with a 22. Cal I couldn’t carry it back to the bus where I was living, so I tried to smoke it to keep the bugs off it but that didn’t work. I would of had food to last me a while because It was a pretty big moose. Now I had no food and all the animals were hiding do with the cold so now I turned to the books and living off of berries. I just want you to know that I love you and care about you that’s why I wrote to you first before anybody else. I know you probably hate me for just leaving and not saying bye properly, but i…
It was the youth hunt and I was heading out on a journey I would never forget. It was a Saturday morning. I did not see anything besides the squirrels that were staring me in the face and saying, “sorry nothing today.” I went again later that day at about one o’clock. I was sitting there as i saw nothing again it was just a bad day for hunting didn’t see anything…
It was a typical day in Ghana when my mother asked me to go and milk the cow at our farm that was just before the woods. I had always been an exploratory person and this time I wanted to go and discover the woods. I had always been told to stay away from the woods by family and friends for a very long time, and could not wait any longer. I walked into the woods as quietly as I could trying very hard to avoid to stepping on the crispy leaves, as I make a prickly noise. Suddenly,…
After hours of sitting out on the dock, my cousins and I were getting tired. So, we decided to see who could catch a fish first, and then we’ll be able to go inside. It took us another hour in order for one of us to catch a fish. During that hour, there was a lot of frustration and yawning. Since we all gave up on trying to find a manatee, we began to bring in all of the plates that were once filled with food and the fishing poles. But, as soon as we started to get everything together, we heard a noise coming from the water that sounded like something was breathing. Well, to our surprise, that was the sea cow we were hoping to see. The sky around us was too dark to see near us, and the tiny lanterns on the dock didn’t help too…
