Jerry had not seen his children in nine years because he could not afford to fly across the country. It took him that long to save enough money to make the trip. This shows how much of a problem poverty is. Poverty prevents many Americans from enabling themselves to visit family for long periods of time. This makes poverty a huge obstacle to overcome if a person, such as Jerry, just wanted to see their family.
