Active space is typically used when you have movement or even when the subject may be looking off into the distance. This technique should be used when space is wanted to be given to the subject to move in the photo. Active space often creates an illusion in the photograph that make the photograph appear more interesting. Some examples of when active space is to be used is when you want to add space between a subject and the end of the photograph, like if someone were to be walking on the beach.
