In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s many Russian immigrants journeyed to the United States of America. Russians wanted to move to America for opportunity. In Russia, they did not have many opportunities. In the United States, Russian parents will be able to send their kids to school, and they can get a job easily. Not only could they send their kids to school, but they would be in a safer community. Russian farmers wanted to improve their agriculture also. One of the main reasons Russians went to America was to find their family members. Some families were split up while trying to travel to the United States. They left because of what was happening back in Russia. The first main reason why they left was because of disease. A cold nasty, sickness called Cholera swept over Russia. This sickness was caused by poor sanitary in the town’s water supply. In one year this sickness killed 3 million Russians. Another disease that took over Russia was a brutal famine. This famine lasted from 1891 to 1892. People had to eat old food to save themselves from starvation. This caused horrible sickness and many deaths. Another reason Russians left their town was because they wanted to be able to vote. They felt that if they were able to vote they could get their voice to be heard. Lastly, Russians left Russia after the two main cities Sweden and Denver, were destroyed in The Christmas Hurricane in 1902. Things you see on a day to day basis were made by Russian immigrants. Russia brought many arts to the United States. One thing the immigrants brought was piano music. Piano was first introduced in 1840 by Anton Rubestein. Every American loved the piano after the first song. It got so popular that Anton would have to travel every night to a different location. Ballet was also introduced to the public by a Russian immigrant. Anna Pavalo and MikHail Mordin's were the first to do show the citizens a ballet show. The reason it became so popular was because of the costumes and makeup. Just like what happened with the piano players, the dancers started to perform every night. Along with ballet and piano, film was also invented. Sergei Eisenstein brought film to the states. The main films that were brought to America was animations, and movies. One of the most famous movies a Russian immigrant made was called “The Battleship Potemkin” in 1929. Many of the ideas were thought of during the war. Immigration has been apart of this country for a long time. It has shaped it in many ways, and it still
