SIDS Persuasive Speech
Do you know that about 2246 babies die each year from SIDS? This last statistic was from 2004 according to the National SIDS Resource Center.

How can you keep your baby safe and healthy? These 10 tips will help you.

The first tip concerns SIDS. I was so afraid that my baby could die from this and I did not know at the time what caused the death or how to prevent it.

1. DON'T let you baby sleep on her/his stomach.

It was discovered that babies who sleep on their back or sides lower their chances. Instead of having blankets in the crib, buy the blanket sleepers to keep your baby warm.

Don't use bumper pads in the crib or basinette or have toys in it either. So have nothing in the crib but the baby. And remind anyone who takes care of your baby to make sure that baby is put to sleep on her/his back.

Don't have hot drinks while wearing your baby in a sling or front carrier.

Also cooking while you have your baby in a sling or carrier is just too dangerous. I trust I don't need to explain.

3. Don't give soda to your baby ever!

This is like giving your baby pure poison. Believe it or not when I was growing up I actually saw mothers put soda in the baby's bottle.

4. You have heard of babies dying because they have been shaken.

So I know how it feels when you have a baby that just won't stop crying. I read an alarming statistic. It said that about 50% of all adults have no clue that a baby can die or get brain damage if shaken!

You must make sure that anyone who might take care of your baby knows this. Here is a short list of some signs that someone may have done this to your baby.

* Baby won't eat very much

* Vomiting

* Extreme irritability

* Does not lift head even though your baby was doing so

    The pamphlet created on Co-sleeping with infants was presented to a co-workers sister who has a 2 week old son. The mother’s age is 31, and her highest level of education is a High School Diploma – which while attaining this diploma, remedial education classes were attended. Healthcare knowledge of the mother and family are minimal. The mother, Ms. Brown, was very receptive to my education about having the baby co-sleep. Ms. Brown is breastfeeding her son, and validated that she was encouraged to allow her son to sleep in the bed with her by the Le Leche team at the hospital at which she delivered. The information was well received, and in fact, Ms. Brown pulled out her old…

    Although there isn’t a true way to prevent SIDS there are many steps a parent can take to decrease the chances of SIDS. One, of the many, very important ways to prevent SIDS is to have the correct bedding and sleeping posture. A baby must always sleep on its back, a baby sleeping on its stomach is unstable and could suffocate. It may seem strange, but avoid soft bedding, babies should be placed on a firm crib mattress, with one light sheet to cover them. Bedding can’t have comforters, pillows, or quilts that could suffocate or overheat a baby. Make sure the temperature of the room isn’t too hot or too…

    Sleeping with a baby seemed normal to me. I never thought about dangers or how it could go wrong. Right now I have 5 nephews, and each of them I know their mother ended up sleeping in the same bed, or on the couch with them, when they were breastfeeding. Even when I baby sat, I would sometimes fall asleep with them in my arms when they were young. There are many different views on co-sleeping, and the detriment/ benefits of it. Co-sleeping is defined as a parent and baby share a bed, according to the March of Dimes. There are obvious reasons why sleeping with your baby could result badly: getting trapped by the bed frame, falling off the bed, being smothered by blankets, or getting rolled on (March of Dimes, 1). But a big question that arose…

    To prevent this problem, advise parents never to put their baby to bed with a bottle. If parents insist a bottle is necessary to allow a baby to fall asleep, encourage them to fill it with water and use a nipple with a smaller hole to prevent the baby from receiving a large amount of fluid. If the baby refuses to drink anything but milk, the parents might dilute the milk with water more and more each night until the bottle is down to water only.…

    Like a previous article referenced, a study in New Zealand uncovered that over three thousand lives have been saved since 1990, due to changing an infant’s sleeping position from prone to supine. It is estimated in this same study that over 40,000 lives have been saved in the United States. However, there are many more preventative measures a nurse can teach parents of infants in order to save more lives. This article, “SIDS prevention: 3000 lives saved but we can do better,” suggests the following areas to educate parents on: keep the environment smoke free, do not co-sleep with the infant, do not place stuffed animals in the crib, do not cover the infant’s head with blankets, use a firm mattress in good condition, and immunize your children.…
