He was easily the top sergeant and was routinely given tasks normally reserved for SNCOs. Marines under his charge were always well organized and highly motivated directly due to his efforts. One specific noteworthy achievement was his intervention and direct actions when faced with an attempted suicide. He fearlessly stepped into the point of friction, correctly and swiftly took action without guidance and limited information on the situation. His actions and maturity were responsible for safe guarding a life of a fellow Marine. In addition, then Sgt Arnold masterfully performed as a Section Head/Area Supervisor for the Henoko Ammunition Supply Point. In this capacity, he was responsible for 22 ammunition magazines with 2500 line items of explosive materiel valued at roughly $90 million dollars. SNCs’ five paragraph order contained pertinent information, but was heavily punctuated with the use of filler words such as “uh” which hindered the flow of the order and made it difficult to understand. SNC’s Situation paragraph was briefed out of sequence. During movement to the objective SNC moved throughout the squad to ensure proper dispersion and physically moved subordinates who did not immediately correct dispersion. But when we talk about a Sgt. of Marines, things are more different. As a Sgt. of Marines not only you are in charge of the mission. You are responsible for the life and safety of all your Marines. You are the one that will be making difficult decision that may put your Marines in danger and may cost their lives or yours to save them. World War II in the Pacific has often been described as a "Sergeant's war." Small unit leaders carried an immense amount of responsibility for the overall battle. On most Pacific islands, there was little space for wide, sweeping maneuvers, or operational-level tactics. Typically, infantry Marines would team-up with tanks, engineers, and other attachments to hammer against the enemy's lines. Example of such dedication to the mission and to save life’s of their fellow Marines on the worst situation and sometimes even costing their lives. NCO's such as Sgt. Smith were in the forefront of combat, leading their Marines and setting the example under the toughest battlefield conditions. Able needed heavy fire support. Sgt Smith determined to find it. He moved out on foot and located three Sherman tanks. Leading them forward, he pointed out Japanese defenses for the tanks to engage. Under his fire direction, the Sherman’s destroyed numerous enemy positions at point blank range. Sgt. Smith continued to lead by example. Seeing wounded Marines trapped in front of the enemy's positions, he made several trips across exposed terrain to rescue four wounded comrades. He also organized litter teams to rescue other trapped Marines. SNC’s order made sense, however SNC spent valuable time delving into information which was irrelevant to the mission. SNC asked subordinates questions pertaining to the order to ensure it was understood. SNC issued specific tasks which also included primary and secondary subordinates for the casualty aid and litter. SNC correctly determined the azimuth and lead SNC’s subordinates in the proper direction.
