SWOT Analysis: The Belt And Road Initiative

The Belt and Road Initiative (hereinafter referred to as the initiative), is a long-term plan proposed by China, to cooperate with other countries to improve the relationship. Being a city with free economy and connection with other external countries, Hong Kong is playing an active role in assisting China in the initiative (The 2016 Policy Address, 2016). The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has initiated policies in recent years to help so. The issue of whether Hong Kong should continue to support the initiative has stirred up controversy. There is a spectrum of opinions among different political parties. The advocates, who are mainly the pro-establishment, put forward the idea that the initiative helps Hong Kong to boost the economic growth and promotes the international image. Yet, the opponents, who are mainly the pan-democrats, stand on a different ground that there is a chance to get a failure in the projects, thus to have negative impacts on the government’s financial reserve.
