Tornados and their aftermath are a frequent occurrence in the part of the United States in which I live, the Midwest region of the United States. Having participated in training drills, exercises, and real-life events in my own county, this simulation brought to mind many of the requirements for effective disaster management I have learned through Incident Command Systems training (ICS). Federal standards are in place and practiced for disaster preparedness, along with adaptations in each state, region, and county to accommodate differences in personnel available and facilities in place. She also was able to provide information to residents regarding temporary shelter when appropriate. She involved social workers, interpreter and translation services, counseled residents regarding shelter options, arranged for medications to be obtained or delivered, and performed rapid physical and mental health assessments of victims she encountered. Upon her return to the command center, she arranged for written instructions to be provided to affected residents regarding clean-up, food safety, water safety, follow-up mental health and counseling, and contact lists for various resources. Through therapeutic communication, she was able to comfort and reassure victims and de-escalate potentially volatile situations. By canvassing door-to-door, neighborhood by neighborhood, she was able to reach out and assist a great number of residents. She was also able to effectively assess the needs of the victims and report back to her chain of command regarding conditions out in the
