5 Components of ‘Health Related Exercise’
Through your PEP you need to be able to understand that these components are the building blocks of an athletes overall fitness. Some sports/activities require more of one component than another but all high level athletes need to pay attention to all components of ‘health related exercise’. As we discuss these components try to note down examples of activities that are specific to these components of fitness. If you can; also try to relate it to your chosen sport/ activity and how the component can help your performance.
Remember – Chocolate makes me big and Fat Body composition - The percentage of bodyweight that is fat, muscle and bone
Flexibility - The range of movement possible at a joint
Muscular Strength - the amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance
Muscular Endurance - the ability to use voluntary muscles many times without getting tired
Cardiovascular Fitness - The ability to exercise the whole body for long periods of time
During your PEP you will mainly be trying to improve Muscular Endurance and/or Cardiovascular Fitness
6 Components of ‘Skill Related Fitness’
Skill related fitness helps people to become good at physical activity. Fitness skills can be developed and improved with practice and training. Different sports need different skills or in most cases a combination of skills. Being good at more technical activities and events requires more of the six skills.
During your PEP you need to understand that the following components contribute to improved skills within your activity. Try to think about specific movements and activities that are relevant for each component. Make some notes as we
