19 February 2012 Social Responsibility Project Ivailo Ivanov 11D Introduction:
There are many socio-economic issues world-wide presently. I will name and briefly explain four current issues in South Africa. I will then discuss one specific socio-economic issue in detail that I believe needs attention. With the use of research I shall explain how SAB Ltd is/can be involved to improve the state of this issue by means of Corporate Social Responsibility projects.
Socio-Economic Issues in South Africa:
Xenophobia: "an unreasonable fear of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign.” Xenophobia has forced many foreigners/immigrants out of South Africa due to violence enforced by fellow South Africans. This was done in the recent past and may still be occurring due to fear of unemployment and overcrowded areas. Xenophobia has a negative impact on the country’s image which may chase away foreign investors and skilled labour.
Energy Crisis/Power Shortages: South Africa is known for its insufficient power supplies. Power Shortages lead to many economic and social problems in the country such as: decreased productivity due to lack of energy, failure of production of many large companies and increased risk to employees working in dangerous environments such as mines. Eskom is the main culprit in this issue, not managing its resources properly lead to these shortages. Increase
