Safe Haven Park: A Short Story
Every summer, the only thing that I could look forward to was at Safe Haven Park. Liam would come to our picnic place and wait for me to finish eating. We would then go off to our meeting place, where the trees would protect us from the blinding sunlight, and we could build a world that we could freely call ours.

“You dummy,” he started, “how could you say that so casually? Saying those words is like saying you want to spend the rest of your life with that person.”
“Oh,” I replied, “but is it wrong to want to spend my days with you?”

His warm palm touched mine and as soon as I was about to let go, he squeezed my hand. After a pause, he squeezed my hand twice. After another pause, he squeezed my hand three consecutive times. One. Pause. One-two. Pause. One-two-three. My heart skipped a beat as I felt his hand compressing into mine. I looked up to see his countenance. His cheeks flushed and his charming hazel eyes gazed into my green ones.

We were on our way to Canobie Lake Park. It had been a long two hours, but my dad was playing comedian albums from his phone, so we were preoccupied. “Are we almost there?” my brother asked. “No, were not stop asking.” Little brothers can be so annoying with their questions. We were almost there just five minutes to go. The view was so gorgeous. The lake was glistening from the sun. I had been to focused on the view and before I knew it we were at the…

“Sunday in the Park” by Bel Kaufman brings into focus a wife’s resentment against the seeming impotence of her husband against a bully. The husband, Morton, backs off from the other man whose child has been bullying their own little boy. Back home, the wife appears to submit to the logic of non-violence adopted by her husband, but when their child, sickly and fragile, is having tantrums, the exasperated Morton threatens it with punishment. The first time I recognized him was from across the cafeteria of my old high school. He was decent looking, had nice eyes, and an amazing smile. I had met him at a party a few weeks ago and we had exchanged numbers. My friend told me that Tim had liked me since the beginning of the school year but just never acted upon it. Once I showed interest in him he leaped at the chance and asked me out. On our first date he took me to a lake and brought his guitar with him. With his beautiful voice he started singing a song and playing along just as stunningly. I was so moved by his gesture that I started liking him back. The next few months were magical, but like any ordinary relationship the waters started getting a little rough as we got closer.…
