I was asleep in our dorm at Culver Creek when all of the sudden Mile Halter,my roommate slammed the door to the room waking me up. He was not in a good mood and went into the bathroom. As we were traveling on the trail, we were stopped by the South Platte River. We need to cross the river in order to follow a stream that heads to the North. We check if there were bridges around the place since the water was shallow, but we saw no bridge. We decided to use the sand bar we saw so we can get across the river. It was a beautiful July day in 2014 when my family and I were camping at Holland Lake with our family friends Kinsey and Lauren. There wasn't a cloud in sight and the sun reflected off the bluish greenish water. The air smelt of smoke and fresh trees. Early in the morning when the campground is quiet you can even hear the waterfall. Holland Lake is a very busy lake with boaters, tubers, water skiers, ect. Since that day was so nice there were a bunch of boats on the lake the waves were huge. Kinsey, Lauren, Alex and I were all pretty close in age but Alex and Lauren were taller so they get the outside of the tube. When we all finished breakfast I changed into my swimming suit speedy fast and rode my bike as fast as I could to my cousins camper, Alex. I had to wait what felt like 5 hours for her to change. Once she was done we waited for Kinsey and Lauren at ¨The Beach¨. Alex and I killed time by talking about how much fun we were going to have…

As the fog lifts and the sun begins to rise over Torrey Pines golf course cliffside, I can’t stop myself from staring into the vast Pacific Ocean that forms the perfect early morning backdrop. The salty ocean breeze briskly flashes across my face as I approach my shot from the tee box of the third hole. A dramatically set two-hundred-yard downhill par three, encased by ocean cliffs, safeguarded by a colony of trees to the right and an enormous sand trap that spans the entire front of the green. An intimidating setting for even the most seasoned golfer, or worse, an opportunity for the average golfer like myself to succumb to the pressure. Just like the person I’ve been paired with for the day, I’ve never played this course before. As I…

The day was sunny and bright as I entered the iron arch. Rocky River Ranch it read. Little did I know that after walking through that arch my life would never be the same again. I was only 12 years old and I thought I was simply going to another summer camp. Rocky River Ranch is a little slice of heaven in the middle of the hill country in Wimberley, TX. I have grown up here and made lifelong friends. Through this all-girls camp I’ve also learned independence and gained a deeper appreciation for friendship and sisterhood. As an only child, the feeling of camaraderie with others in a familial sense is not one that I felt. While I had fellow female cousins, I never had true sisters. Rocky River Ranch is a special place where I learned the importance…

Every year, my family on my dad’s side goes rafting down the Truckee river. It has always been a tradition to go to tahoe over the summer, and go rafting one of those days. Over the years, we have had many fond memories, like water fights with water guns, and pushing people into the water. First, we go down to the place to rent the raft, they set up our family with two, and then we go down the river until there is a bend where they take you and your raft out. At the end of the place where you can raft, there is a little grill that we would go to for lunch.…

In the wee hours of the morning my life is the embodiment of a living, breathing dichotomy. Awakening with a wry little smile on my face, I knew I had dreamed of the river, big brown trout, and sweet 3wt bamboo rods. My body screams – “Where’s the coffee”, while my brain questions the sanity of getting up this early on a Saturday. Oblivious to the cacophony, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Betraying logic, they forewarn that this pre-dawn moment was the premonition of a great day ahead.…

As European settlers moved westward across the continent, they gravitated toward these springs of warmth and vitality. In 1807, the first European to visit the Yellowstone area, John Colter, probably encountered hot springs, leading to the designation "Colter's Hell." Also in 1807, settlers founded the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, where, in 1830, Asa Thompson charged one dollar each for the use of three spring-fed baths in a wooden tub, and the first known commercial use of geothermal energy occurred.…
