It's rare for a book to present the true chaos of a big family (or maybe I just haven’t read enough books). This book gets the details right--the chaos and clutter, and the independence of the children, even to preparing their own meals. Granted, four children don't really make a very big family, but this book captures the idea.

Saffy is the daughter of Eve's twin sister, who lived in Siena, Italy, and died in a car crash. Grandad brought Saffy, as a very small child, back from Sienna. After her grandpa dies, he leaves something to each of the children. To Saffy, it is "her angel," although no one knows what it is. They insist that the angel isn’t real, that maybe her grandpa meant it more as a being to protect her not an actual item. Saffy insist that if everyone else got an item that her angel had to be real. She has these dreams where she is in a small garden with little trees and a stone walkway, she recalls something, then realizes what her grandpa meant. This is where her journey begins. It seems throughout the book the purpose of all of this is Saffy's quest to feel that she truly belongs, but that serious theme is somewhat washed out with delightful, wonderful
